Motivation
• As future electronics engineers, it is important for students to start building their own “toolbox”
with the basic electronics components and materials that are typically used to build basic “test
circuits.” It is important to know where to buy these type of components, have a sense of how
much they cost, and understand their availability. These materials will be used through various
courses in the EERE programs at Oregon Tech Wilsonville.

Suggested Materials for Electronics
• Breadboard and hookup wire (e.g., jumper wire kit)
• Resistors: For maximum flexibility an assortment of resistors with 5% tolerances in 1/4 or 1/2
W sizes covering the range from 100 Ω to 1 MΩ is recommended.
• Capacitors: An assortment of non-polarized low-tolerance capacitors such as polystyrene or mylar
in the range from about 0.0001 µF to 10 µF is recommended.
• Potentiometers: A couple of potentiometers are desirable. Suggested values are 0-1 kΩ, 0-10 kΩ,
and 0–100 kΩ.
• Diodes: 4 general purpose small–signal diodes (e.g. D1N4004).
• LEDs and lightbulbs: 2 general purpose LEDs, 1 small lightbulb.
• Operational Amplifiers: 4 op-amps (741 or equivalent).
• Transistors: 4 small-signal general purpose BJT NPN transistor arrays, 2 small-signal general
purpose BJT PNP transistor arrays, or an assortment of individual NPN and PNP transistors,
two n-channel MOSFETs.
• Optional: Low cost DMM, assorted cables and connectors.
