High Impact Teaching Strategies – HITS Differentiated Teaching Supporting engagement and continuity of learning in the remote and flexible context 1 2 HITS in remote and flexible learning - Differentiated Teaching These slides were delivered through a series of webinars held during the Remote and Flexible Learning Period in 2020, a joint presentation between the Teacher Professional Practice Unit, DET and Dr Michael Phillips, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education, Monash University. We know that student wellbeing and engagement are foundational precursors for learning and achievement. A positive climate for learning is enabled by trusting relationships that foster inclusion and connection between students, teachers and their school community. 4 – EARLY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS AND AREAS FOR DEEPER FOCUS Strong relationships and open dialogue with families, carers and kin will support student engagement, build trust and assist teachers with differentiating learning appropriately for the individual learner context. We know that partnering with families/carers and kin around student learning at all levels and ages, supports student efficacy and confidence as well as fostering positive attitudes for learning. 5 – EARLY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS AND AREAS FOR DEEPER FOCUS When students have high expectations for their own learning, and can exercise agency in learning, this has a powerful effect on their engagement and in turn learning outcomes. We know that routines and consistency are highly influential for developing learner confidence and supporting engagement . We know that considerations of the home environment and access and connectivity to technology for individual students is important in remote and flexible learning. 6 THE VICTORIAN TEACHING AND LEARNING MODEL An online professional learning module and an expanded HITS resource catalogue will be released later this term to provide additional support for pedagogical approaches. 7 Sequencing Online Learning Engage: spark interest in the topic and present learning goals and success criteria Explore: to activate prior knowledge, collectively investigate the topic/learning area and organise shared knowledge Evaluate: constantly monitor learning progress through teacher, peer and selfevaluation, and using written/verbal assessment of/for learning Explain: explicitly teach new knowledge and model the application of new skills Elaborate: empower students to use the new knowledge through multiple exposures and supported by worked examples 8 High Impact Teaching Strategies To support learner engagement, confidence and achievement through remote and flexible learning we can draw upon the High Impact Teaching Strategies we know are influential in providing the consistency and purposeful routines that are critical to student learning. • • • • Structuring Lessons Explicit Teaching Worked Examples Differentiated Teaching 9 Effective differentiated teaching is based upon understanding student learning readiness, learning progress, and knowledge of individual student learning profiles, to make evidence based adjustments for individuals so all students experience challenge, success and improved learning. 10 Before we get to the HITS ...
