MM: The social media application that I like using the most is Instagram. IN: How do you think this application is different from the rest? MM: This application is different in the way that you can upload new photos every day and you can make new friends quite easily than other social media applications. IN: How do you think social media nowadays affects the way you think? MM: Social media nowadays does affect the way we think because it sets unrealistic beauty standards, and it may cause anxiety and depression to the users as well. IN: Would you say that this impact is more of a general result of consuming social media, or does it affect everyone differently? MM: I think that it affects everyone in a different way because different people have different inferiority complexes and that the way they perceive the negative impact of this application is different for everyone. IN: Do you think that the representation of beauty standards is realistic nowadays? MM: I don’t think that the representation of beauty standards is realistic nowadays mainly because of the filters that we see on the photos. There are a lot of people that use photoshop, and they retouch their photos, thus I don’t think it’s realistic anymore. IN: Does the participant ever find themselves self-criticizing their physical appearance? MM: Yes, I can go into inferiority complex when I see other influencers and when I see the physical appearance of other people, I sometimes criticize my own. IN: If we talk about the past 2 years, would you say your confidence has increased or decreased through the usage of social media? MM: I’d say my confidence has decreased due to the usage of social media because when I see influencers and when I see how rich they are, I compare them by what I have, I think that my confidence shatters. IN: Do you think that social media has increased or decreased your connection to reality? MM: I’d say that it has decreased my connection to reality because now when I use social media, I don’t give time to my family and friends and our connection really suffers a lot. IN: Does the participant wish to appear more like what they see on social media? MM: Yes, I do wish to appear more like what I see on social media. IN: Do trends that go viral on social media have an impact on your life? MM: Yes, I think that it does have an impact on my life in a way that it makes me talk about the things that I don’t really want to just to satisfy some of my followers. IN: What has been your most daunting experience on social media? MM: As a child I once saw a video on Twitter that I shouldn’t have seen, and I think that was the most daunting experience of my life on social media. IN: Do you feel as if you have been influenced due to the usage of social media? MM: Yes, I think I have been influenced due to the usage of social in a way that I have been pressurized by the community to upload photos every day so that I can gain followers.
