NUR 106 Exam 1 – SP22 Fluid and Electrolytes, IV placement and
management, Acid/Base Balance –
Study Guide and Blueprint
Questions are from the Lewis, Saunders, and ATI books, PP content, and
lecture – Your past knowledge is also Review the PPs in D2L and notes from
lecture and exam review. Remember the structure of NCLEX type questions
– Your question is your patient – narrow to two answers and use your
critical thinking skills to see what your patient needs in accordance with the
question parameters i.e.; first, next, priority, not, etc. In addition, make
sure you pay attention to what kind of patient you are working with; is the
patient in the ED, in the hospital, the clinic, or receiving discharge teaching.
On each question, breathe and relax, read the question twice to be sure you
understand.
You will have an enforced 1.5 minutes per question.
1) Know the types of fluids, hypo, iso, hypertonic, colloid vs crystalloid
2) Know when these fluids would be used, precautions, what to watch for
3) Understand H&H and what lowers or raises HCT
4) Know the levels of Electrolytes Signs and Symptoms of hypo/hyper,
causes and treatments
5) Know proper gauges of IVs, important assessment points of a
peripheral IV line, checking fluids prior to hanging
6) Know Acidosis and Alkalosis, Respiratory and Metabolic
7) Know how to analyze ABG results using ROME or TicTacToe –
8) Know your foods for all electrolytes, substances for Acid and Base
9) Know your Diuretics
10)
Know differences in the aging adult
11)
Know calculations for rates of infusion and drip rates.
The test is proctored by Respondus Lock-Down Browser and Webcam.
The test will have approx. 60 questions, approx. 5 of which are math
questions. The test is timed at 90 seconds per question.
