DIABETES Done By: Areeba Irfan 10D WHAT IS DIABETES ? Diabetes is a condition in which the blood glucose levels remain too high. The extra insulin causes the liver to convert glucose into glycogen , which reduces the blood glucose level. There are two types of diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2. People with type 1 diabetes don't produce insulin. You can think of it as not having a key (inability to produce insulin) . People with type 2 diabetes don't respond to insulin as well as they should and later in the disease often don't make enough insulin. You can think of it as having a broken key (insulin resistance) . TREATMENT 1 INSULIN : All people with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day via an injection, pump or inhaler. Only some with type 2 diabetes require this medication. This controls the blood sugar in people whose body doesn't make insulin and therefore can’t control the amount of sugar in the blood. TREATMENT 2 DIET AND EXERCISE : Although type 1 diabetes can’t be managed with lifestyle changes, eating a healthy diet and regularly breaking a sweat can provide big benefits to people with type 2 diabetes ● ● ● Control weight Eat healthy Increase physical activity TREATMENT 3 ORAL MEDS: People with type 2 diabetes may take pills, liquids and insulin to keep blood sugar in a healthy range. HOME GLUCOSE METER : This treatment starts with you, at home, where you’ll test your glucose every day. Based on your levels, you’ll know how, what and when to eat. WORLD DIABETES DAY !!
