Fractions are similar if they
have the same
denominator. It is dissimilar
if they have different
denominators.
Identify similar and
dissimilar fractions, write
S if the fractions are similar
and D if dissimilar
1. 2/3 and 1/3

If you know how to add/subtract
similar and dissimilar fractions, you
can also add/subtract mixed numbers
easily. Add/subtract the whole
numbers and also add/subtract the
fractional part.
(Teacher will give other examples)
Routine problem can easily
be solved using at least one
arithmetic operation and or
ratio. Non-routine problem-is
a type of problem that
requires analysis,
manipulation or derivation of
formulas and the like.
Oftentimes, this problem can
be solved in multiple ways. It
encouraged group discussion
in finding the correct solution.
Phrases used in addition of
numbers are: plus, the sum

water. How much is the
mixture?

II. Review
Change the following
dissimilar fractions to
similar.
1. 3/8 and ½
2. 2/3 and 1/6
3. 3/5 and ¼
4. 2/8 and 1/5
5. 4/6 and 4/8
There are cases that the fractional
parts cannot be subtracted. That is,
minuend is smaller than the
subtrahend. If it happens, you can
apply regrouping. Regrouping means
you need to borrow one from a whole
number to make the fraction of the
minuend larger than the fraction of
the subtrahend.
(Teacher will give other examples)
of, the total of; increased by,
more than and added to. For
subtraction we use the words
like the difference of, reduced
by, diminished by, subtract
from, subtracted to.
Translate each of the
following problem to
mathematical symbol. Write
your answer in your
notebook.
III. Motivation
Do you know how to
prepare dalandan juice?
What are the effects of
drinking dalandan juice to
our health?
GROUP ACTIVITY
Steven prepared dalandan
juice for his daughter. He
mixed 1/5 cup of dalandan
juice and 3/5 cup of water.
How many cups of liquid
did he mix in all?
 Who prepared
dalandan juice?
 What did he mix?
ASSIMILATION

answers)
the numerators and copy the
common denominator. Then
simplify the resulting fraction
if necessary. When the
sum/difference is improper
fraction, change it to a mixed
number.
To add/subtract dissimilar
fractions, change the fraction
to similar fractions using
equivalent fraction.
