I 1.General Overview of Gedo Substation Gedo Substation is found in west shoa, chalia district ,Gedo city,oromia region. The Substation administration is under nekemt region. Gedo Substation is established during Derg government in 1982 EC. It has been giving service for the Society in different places for over 33 years. It is one of huge Substations found in Oromia region. Many cities of Oromia region have been getting power supply from the substation since 1982EC. There are Six generation station power supply lines of 230kv coming from different places of the country and gets interconnected by double bus bar arrangement system at the substation. The generation stations are: 1. Gibe 2. Finchea 3. Nashe 4. Gafarsa I 5. Gafarsa II 6. Gafarsa III Lines of 230kv coming from those generation stations are coupled one to one and connected to 230kv bus bar. Gibe and Finchea ,Nashe and Gafarsa I, Gafarsa II and Gafarsa III are coupled together. The coupling is so important In case one of the coupled generation station gets damaged. For instance,if Gibe power supply is disconnected due to technical problem at the generation station ,it can get power supply from Finchea for it is coupled together. 1 There are two three phase stepdown autotransformer which converts 230kv into 132kv/15kv. 15kv line is directly distributed to the cities. Gedo,Bako, Mida kany and Ijaji are cities supplied directly from the substation with 15kv line. 132kv is transmitted to the main recieving stations located at Nekemt and Guder. In addition, 132kv is converted into 33kv by one of the transformer in the substation and distributed to cities called Tulu Nacha and Sayo. Fig 1.1 Schematic diagram of the Gedo substation 2 Fig 1.2: Picture of substation switchyard 3 1.1 Problems that needs to be solved Although this substation has been in service for such along years, some of the equipment needs to be maintained or replaced. The equipments are installed since establishment of the substation. Due to many years of service the equipment gets damage and old. Some of the problems are: the alarm system is not working. One of the feeder is burned and not giving service since 2010EC. Some of them that are not damaged needs to be upgraded. The relays do not properly display the measurements(blurred). Due to the above problems there is usually fluctuation of power in the cities. In order to get continuous power, supply the problems needs to be solved technically by using new technologies and proper replacement of the equipment. 4
