Based on the survey conducted, most of the residents
(65%) of Barangay Masaya consult doctors or nurses,
either private or public practitioners. The remaining
35% would practice self-medication or would consult
traditional healers.

sedentary. For example, instead of doing physical
activity, people choose as form of leisure to watch TV
and stay at home. Availability and accessibility of
transportations add to the problem on inadequate
physical activity.

Among the households surveyed, 75% had at least
one member who is an active smoker. It was also
observed that cigarettes are easily available and
affordable to the people. 100% of sari-sari stores sell
cigarettes. 80% of the households had at least one
member who is an alcohol drinker. Of the 204
household, 79 persons or 39% drink any kind of
alcoholic beverages occasionally or regularly. Since
lambanog is cheap, and abundant production sites
are identified in the community, the people can easily
afford and buy lambanog products. Alcohol is easily
available and affordable. 100% of sari-sari stores sell
alcoholic drinks.

They perceived causes of the livelihood problem
surfaced from the FGD were: “maraming di
nakapagtapos”, “maraming tamad”, and “wala
masyadong oportunidad sa Masaya”. The attitude of
the people was also reported to be contributory to
this problem. As mentioned earlier from the focused
group discussions, many people are lazy to work and
content themselves with drinking lambanog.
