INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
Unisa, as a comprehensive open distance e-learning institution (CODeL), is moving
towards becoming a fully online institution. You will therefore see that all your study
material, assessments and engagements with your lecturer and fellow students will
take place online. This tutorial letter is intended to offer you some guidance in this
regard.
Welcome to the online honours module in Industrial Psychological Assessment
(IOP4861).
It is important to note that this module in Industrial Psychological
Assessment does not allow your admission to a psychometrist
practicum. According to the Professional Board for Psychology, under
the auspices of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
registration as a Psychometrist is contingent on completion of an
accredited 4-year BPsych or a B Psych equivalent degree accredited by
the board that incorporates an approved 6 month/720-hour face-to-face
practicum.
After having completed your honours at Unisa, you should thus apply for
professional training at an accredited institution and complete a sixmonth approved/accredited practicum. IOP4861, however, forms the
theoretical basis necessary for obtaining a relevant honours degree as
a prerequisite for doing professional training and a practicum and future
registration as a psychometrist with the HPCSA. You are required to
access the professional publications of the Professional Board of
Psychology that are relevant to psychological assessment and
registration as a psychometrist.
A primary task in managing human talent is to select and develop employees to their full
potential. Industrial Psychological assessment provides information to select the best
candidates and develop employees appropriately. Individual differences and the scientific
measurement thereof form the core of industrial psychological assessment. In this module,
you will study the theory and practice underlying the scientific assessment of individual
attributes such as personality, cognition, and behaviour.
Psychological assessment in the work context is a contentious discipline since it is influenced
by the past and current socio-political contexts. As such, you need to develop a critical
attitude towards assessment theory and practice in a multicultural work context. You are also
required to develop a responsible attitude in adhering to regulating professional standards
and legal imperatives.
This module does not include any practical training in the use of psychological instruments,
which is required for registration as a psychometrist. If you wish to register as a psychometrist
4
IOP4861/101/0/2023
after completion of your honour’s degree at UNISA, you should apply for a professional training
program at an accredited institution. You could contact the HPCSA in this regard. Although
this is a theoretical module, we do try to provide you with as many practical applications as
possible (in your study material and your assignments).
Your study material for this module consists of online study guidance (myUnisa), tutorial
letters, a prescribed textbook, a recommended book, recommended articles as well as
professional source documents.
1.1
Study material
All the study material is immediately available online on the myUnisa IOP4861_2023 platform

CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter, in terms of which the university has placed
curriculum transformation high on the teaching and learning agenda. Curriculum
transformation includes student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and
assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African
epistemologies and philosophies. All of these will be phased in at both programme and module
levels, and because of this you will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning
strategy implemented by Unisa, together with the way in which the content is conceptualised
in your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa
in a responsive way within the framework of transformation.

Prescribed book
You should obtain the following prescribed book:
Moerdyk, A. (2022). The principles and practice of
psychological assessment. 3rd Ed. Pretoria: Van Schaik.
You will use this book for the assignments, and you need to study all the chapters in this book
to pass the examination.
Prescribed books can be obtained from the university’s official booksellers. The prescribed
book is available as an e-book. If you have difficulty locating your book(s) at the booksellers,
please contact the Prescribed Book Section at Tel: 012 429-4152 or e-mail

Recommended book
The two recommended books can be borrowed from the library but are subject to availability.
They are available as e-books and the links are provided below.
The first recommended book is a useful source on the different types of psychological
instruments we use in the SA work context. It is, however, not compulsory as you can obtain
information on different types of psychological instruments from other reliable sources such
as articles or psychometric distributor websites. The recommended book by Laher and
Cockroft (2013) is a good source describing various instruments in South Africa.

PRACTICAL WORK AND WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING
There is no practical work for this module.
It is important to note that this module in industrial psychological assessment does
not allow your automatic admission to a psychometrist practicum. According to the
Professional Board for Psychology, under the auspices of the Health Professions
Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registration as a Psychometrist is contingent on
completion of an accredited 4-year BPsych or a B Psych equivalent degree
accredited by the board that incorporates an approved 6 month/ or 720-hour faceto-face practicum.
After having completed your honours at Unisa, you should thus apply for professional training
at an accredited institution and complete a six-month approved/ accredited practicum.
IOP4861, however, forms the theoretical basis necessary for obtaining a relevant honours
degree as a prerequisite for doing professional training and a practicum and future registration
as a psychometrist with the HPCSA. You are required to access the professional publications
of the Professional Board of Psychology that are relevant to psychological assessment and
registration as a psychometrist.
10

available to you. Quiz assessment questions are not included in this tutorial letter
(Tutorial Letter 101) and are only made available online. You must therefore access
the quiz online and complete it online where the quiz has been created.
•
It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop
computer, tablet or laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell phone
find it difficult to navigate the Online Assessment tool on the small screen and often
struggle to navigate between questions and successfully complete the quizzes. In
addition, cell phones are more vulnerable to dropped internet connections than other
devices. If possible, please do not use a cell phone for this assessment type.
•
For written assessments, please note the due date by which the assessment must be
submitted. Ensure that you follow the guidelines given by your lecturer to complete the
assessment. Click on the submission button on the relevant assessment shell on
myModules. You will then be able to upload your written assessment on the
myModules site of the modules that you are registered for. Before you finalise the
upload, double check that you have selected the correct file for upload. Remember, no
marks can be allocated for incorrectly submitted assessments.
You will NOT see the assignment submission in the Assessment Info tool, even if you have
submitted it. Results will only show once all student’s assignments have been processed
approximately 2 weeks after the due date of the assignment.
NOTE:
Assignments may not be submitted (emailed) to lecturers; it must go through the
online portal (myUnisa). Extensions will not be granted.
10.5
Evaluation of assignments
Assignment questions are focused on the lessons - based on the prescribed book,
recommended books, and e-resources as well as the additional information resources
indicated. When marking your assignments, we consider not only your knowledge and
understanding of the theoretical contents and concept, but also your application/practical skills
and whether you are developing certain critical analysis techniques and attitudes towards your
learning experiences and the content of this module
During the assessment the following are important:
•
Knowledge and understanding (insight): Do I know the facts and concepts, and can
I explain their uses in my own words?
•
Practical tasks and applied competencies: Can I do certain tasks and skills based
on my knowledge of the study material (applied skills, "deep insight")?
•
Attitude or mind-set: Am I responsible? How well do I perform the tasks or answer
questions? Do I complete the assignments to show my knowledge gained?
•
Critical analysis: Do I copy and paste the information without consideration of
knowledge to be gained?
•
Value: What is in it for me? What is the value of my learning experience to me, my
work or society? How can I make a difference through my practical contribution?

11.1
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them
as your own. It is a form of theft. Plagiarism includes the following forms of academic
dishonesty:
•
Copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
•
Not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information.
•
Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.
11.2 Cheating
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:
•
•
•
•
Completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying the work of another
student during an assessment, or allowing another student to copy your work.
Using social media (e.g., WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate
assessment information.
Submitting corrupt or irrelevant files as per examination guidelines
Buying completed answers from so-called “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating).
UNISA POLICY ON COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT AND PLAGIARISM
PREAMBLE
Where a student or researcher’s work is not authentically his/her own, such work does not
qualify as an academic output, whether it is a student assignment or employee research, and
will be viewed as plagiarism, which is defined as the appropriation of another's work, whether
intentionally or unintentionally, without proper acknowledgement. Copyright is the specific
intellectual property right, which an author acquires in accordance with the Copyright Act 98
of 1978 in respect of a protected work. Copyright infringement includes the infringement of the
economic rights of the right holder and the moral rights of the author.
Academic dishonesty is a denial of ethical values; it undermines the credibility of research
results and is a negation of sound academic practice. No value is added if copyright is infringed
or where unethical research practices are used. Material gained through dishonesty adds
nothing to existing knowledge: there is no growth in the independence of the writer’s
intellectual involvement and the writer’s academic integrity is compromised. Unethical
research practices undermine the purpose of education by casting doubt on the institution’s
ability to promote sound and efficient scholarship.
AIM
The aim of this policy is to empower Unisa employees and students to uphold ethical
standards and to give the University of South Africa the power to act in cases where
contraventions of ethical academic standards occur. A further aim of this policy is to inform
employees and students of the rights of copyright holders; and to provide staff and students
with guidelines for ethical research and study practices.
25
IOP4861/101/0/2023
All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by an employee or student is expected to
be the result of his/her own skill and labour. The economic rights of a copyright owner are
infringed when a person knowingly or unknowingly makes an unauthorised reproduction or
adaptation of a substantial part of another person’s work. Moral rights are infringed when the
author of a work is not given due acknowledgement by means of clear quotations and clear
acknowledgements giving details of the publication concerned.
COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
Copyright is infringed where any of the copyright owner’s exclusive rights are performed
without authorization. Statutory exceptions limit the copyright owner’s rights in permitting that
a copyright work be reproduced or adapted by any fair dealing with a work for research or
private study, criticism, or review of that work or for reporting on current events in a periodical.
The source of the work as well as the name of the author must be mentioned.
The following will be an infringement of work and will not be exempted as fair dealing:
Failure to indicate clearly (e.g., with quotation marks or indentation and different font) phrases
or passages taken verbatim (word for word) from a published or unpublished text without
crediting the original text and author.
Paraphrasing an article, a book, or an electronic text without acknowledging the source(s) and
the author of the work. This amounts to reproducing a text in different words than the author,
by changing the word order of the text, the sentence types, and the style of the author.
Using more than a substantial part of the work will not be fair dealing, even if an
acknowledgment of the source and the author is given.
PLAGIARISM AND OTHER DISHONEST PRACTICES
Unethical use of another person’s work for research or study purposes may, in addition to the
infringement of the copyright owner’s economic rights, also infringe the author’s moral rights
and constitute a criminal offense. The following will amount to the infringement of an author’s
moral rights:
Failure to acknowledge the author whereby phrases or passages are taken verbatim (word for
word) from a published or unpublished text.
Using a summary of a work that contains the ideas of others and presents the essence of an
argument in language that condenses and compresses the original language of the source
without acknowledging the author of the work.
Using the patch-writing (cut and paste) method, whereby sections of the work of other people,
including information from the internet, are blended with one’s own words and phrases without
acknowledging the author of the source work.
Dishonest practices may also amount to criminal offenses, such as fraud, theft, and criminal
copyright liability. Such dishonest practices include the following:
Copying information from another person (e.g., another student’s assignment or portfolio); and
submitting identical work where such work is not the result of teamwork and indicated as such
by all participants.
26
IOP4861/101/0/2023
Buying an essay from a ghost-writing service and pretending that it is your own work.
Asking someone else to do an assignment on your behalf.
CONTRAVENTION OF THIS POLICY
A student or an employee who is guilty of the infringement of copyright or unethical practice
will be subject to the applicable disciplinary code.
AVOIDANCE OF LIABILITY
Compliance with the provisions of the Copyright Act and universally accepted scientific
practice and the reader of the work could satisfy him/herself that the authenticity and integrity
of the sources and the research methodology have been upheld. Citation is a form of respect
for the relevant author’s proprietary rights. Fair use is a form of respect for the author’s
economic rights.

12.1
THE EXAMINATION
Examination period
This module is offered as a continuous, online assessment module which means that you will
not be writing an examination. The assignment 7 that you submit in October 2023 is seen as
your final assessment.
There is no supplementary examination or F1 Concession examination for IOP4861.
PLEASE NOTE: It is your responsibility to confirm the date and submission time of all your
assignments. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you have good internet connectivity
to submit your assignments.
12.2
Content of the assignments
Although all the assignments may be taken as examples of the types of questions that may
be asked in the final assignment, we cannot possibly cover all the questions that could be
asked. All the assignment questions are based on the lesson content.
The assignment questions will be of practical/application nature, and we expect of you to
answer in your own words on what your understanding is.
12.3
Supplementary examination
There is no supplementary exam for IOP4861. If you fail to obtain a 50% minimum mark for
the module, you will have to re-register for the next year.
12.4
Calculating the final module mark
27
IOP4861/101/0/2023
Your final mark is based on your mark for the six compulsory assignments and your POE
mark. Each Assignment carries a different weight towards the total mark:

Assignment 02
Assignment 03
Assignment 04
Assignment 05
Assignment 06
Assignment 07
TOTAL

40%
100%
The combined weighted average of your marks must be 50% or higher for you to pass the
module. If you obtain less than 50% for your total mark, you will fail the module.
For example:
If the total mark for an assignment is 25 and the weight of that assignment is 10% and you
receive an assignment mark of 10, you would have obtained 4% of the total mark. The greater
the weighting of the assignment the higher the percentage mark towards the final mark.
See the table below as an example of how to calculate your year mark considering the weight
of each assignment.
