I Opened a Book
By Julia Donaldson
I opened a book and in I strode.
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.
I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.
I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.
I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.

better. The girl wrote that her mother was tired and sometimes she cried. The advice lady answered the
letter and she was very helpful. She told the girl not to worry too much and to try to cheer her mother
up. She also suggested that the girl's mother should talk with another woman who understands, eat
healthy food and try to get some exercise. (104 words)

Part 1 INTENSIVE READING
Problems with my Mother
A. Last week I was reading the newspaper to keep up with the news, and that's where
I saw the advertisement for a question and answer column. I wasn't really
sure if the person would answer questions from teenagers like me, but I
have a big problem so I thought I would see if she could help me with it.
B. My problem is that I think my mother is sick but she won't go to
the doctor. Whenever I talk to her about it, she says she's fine
and not to worry. But the other day I went into the kitchen and
she was crying and her shoulders were shaking. I'm sure that's
not normal. I haven't seen her sneezing and she doesn't seem
to have a rash, but there's definitely something very wrong. I'm not sure if Dad knows about it. He's
away from home a lot because of his job. We have a new baby, too. I thought that would make her
happy, but I think things are worse since the baby was born. I guess it's because she's so tired
all the time. She spends a long time in bed. Today I helped with the baby before I went to school
because Mum didn't want to get up. I wrote to the lady in the column to ask how I could find out what
was wrong with Mum. I was worried that things might get worse.
C. I am so glad I wrote! She did answer my letter, and she was very helpful. She said my Mum doesn't
sound very well at all. She told me that sometimes it's hard for mothers to take care of their own needs.
They get used to looking after everyone else in the family and they don't have much energy left. She
said it must be hard for my mum with a new baby and my dad being away at work so often. She advised
me to try not to worry about it. She thought my mum might be feeling a bit low and might need someone
to talk to. She said it would be best if she talked to another woman who understands.
D. However, she said I could still help her to get better by continuing what I have already been doing
lately, playing with the baby and helping with the housework. She also advised that mum needs
healthy food and exercise, and suggested we could go out for a walk together each day. She thought
I could cheer my mother up by chatting to her, laughing and smiling and making jokes.
E. I will try all the helpful advice I was given. I do hope my mum gets well soon.

III. Reading
Passage A
I don't like my parents. They always tell me I should do this,
and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Liu
Dan, a middle school student in Beijing. Do you have the same
problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when
they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some
parents are not so friendly in their children's eyes?
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent,
he or she likes worrying things. They worry about everything about you from the time you were born.
They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry
about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much
sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It's easier than you think. Just make sure your
parents know what you're doing. Get them to know your friends. Call them if you stay somewhere
else later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility for what you
have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being
parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able
to help you how to get on with your children.
) 16. The writer of the passage doesn't agree that ______.
(
A. parents want you to grow up healthily
B. parents don't want you to make some bad friends
C. parents worry about everything about you
D. parents want to control you
) 17. Some of the children are angry with their parents in the passage because ______.
(
A. the parents think they eat too much
B. the parents don't like the friends that their children have made
C. the children don't live with their parents
D. the children are limited by their parents
) 18. “They are still practicing being parents.” means ______.
(
A. parents are not always right
B. parents should practice more
C. parents have many mistakes
D. parents are always right
) 19. The main idea in this passage is that ______.
(
A. some of the parents in China don't love their children
B. children and parents should understand more about each other
C. parents should worry too much about their children
D. children should bear everything their parents arranged

Unit 24 Interpersonal Relationship
Passage B
James is a good student and he has lots of friends, but he also
has a problem. Some older boys are bullying him at school.
James is very unhappy and he doesn't know what to do about it.
Here are some suggestions to him and other teenagers in this
situation.
Don't feel worried. It's not your fault! Being bullied can make you
feel very lonely and angry, but you are not alone. Don't feel that
you have to hide the problem. You should find a person you can
trust, and tell them. It might be your teacher, your parents, or even
your friend's parents. After you tell someone, you will get some
support and feel some relief.
Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but here are
other things you can do. Some people express their feelings more easily on paper. Write a letter to
someone or keep a diary. Include all the details about what the bullies do, as well as when and where
the bullying happens. You can use it as proof to show what is going on. And it is a wonderful idea
to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another responsible adult. Then the bullies will feel very
afraid if their names appear in a letter!
Also, don't show you are sad and don't try and fight with the bullies. You could get in trouble yourself.
Ignore them and just walk away. The bullies will soon stop.
(
) 20. What do you think the text is trying to tell us?
A. What to do about being bullied.
B. How to be a good student at school.
C. What to write well in a diary.
D. How to give suggestions to teenagers.
(
) 21. Why does the text advise you not to feel worried if bullied?
A. Because you are not alone.
B. Because you're doing something wrong.
C. Because it is not your fault.
D. Because someone has known about it.
(
) 22. You'd better go and find a person you can trust and _____.
A. know what happens
B. learn from them
C. ask for help
D. make them lonely
(
) 23. If you remember and follow the suggestions above, _____.
A. nobody will speak to the bullies
B. everybody will feel some relief
C. someone will express their feelings
D. the bullies will soon stop
(
) 24. What does the underlined word "ignore" mean in the text?
A. take no notice of
B. take care of
C. make full use of
D. get more help from

Do you feel cool and calm? If your answer is no, you're not alone. In today's
society, many people find it difficult to slow down. Fast-paced lifestyles make it
hard for many to really relax. The good news is you needn't
1
to a nice place
for relaxation. You can experience these in the middle of a stress-filled life.
Better thinking
The ability of relaxation depends more on your thinking than your situation.
The next time when you suffer from worry, think about the situation. What
is the problem? What is the cause? Most importantly, what can you do
about it? Then, make an "action plan" or a "to-do list" to help you feel less
worried.
2
, if the situation is not in your hands, you should let it go.
Take a walk, exercise and talk to a friend to get your mind off the problem.
A habit of relaxing
Even the busiest people arrange short periods of relaxation into their timetable. They do so because
they know it's
3
. The time you spend relaxing is an important period. A 10-minute break in the
middle of a long workday can increase your productivity. You can find a(n)
4 , such as exercise, a
hot bath or favourite TV show, to make you come to life. A few restful hours of doing something you
really enjoy may help you to face a busy week.
Restful sleep
Unfortunately, not being able to relax causes some people to lose their most important rest: sleep. If
that's you, write everything on your mind in your diary before going to bed. Write down both problems and
possible
5 . This can help you release thoughts that might prevent you from getting needed sleep.

your disadvantages. You can't do everything perfectly, but you can get the rest and
relaxation you need to do many things better.

Goal for this lesson:
You will learn how to offer advice.
Dear Tina,
My parents are always arguing, and it's making me feel worried most of
the time. I keep getting bad headaches and I don't feel like eating very
much. My little brother is also unhappy. He cries when they argue. I don't
know what to do. I just want them to stop.
Hong
Dear Hong,
I feel for you. It must be difficult to hear your parents argue a lot. I have some suggestions that I think will help.
Firstly, be sure to drink plenty of water and eat a good breakfast. You might like to go for a walk in
the countryside with a friend you can talk to, as this will help you to relax. I think you must talk to your
parents about how you are feeling, so they can perhaps try to work out their problems more quickly.
Perhaps you could offer to look after your little brother one evening so they can go out on a date night.
I hope that some of these ideas and suggestions will stop you from feeling so helpless. Remember that your
parents love you and they have your best interests at heart, even if they make you feel bad sometimes.

Five Questions for Your Future
1 It is 2030, and you want a job. What skills will you need? That's not an easy question, because 65
percent of jobs in the future will be new. But experts agree that some skills will be necessary. Here
are five questions. Can you answer "yes" to all of them?
Question 1: Can you ask questions?
2
In the future, you will need to ask questions, not just answer them. Why? Because asking good
questions shows that you think differently about a topic. Answering a question often means that you
can remember information—and your phone can do that.
Question 2: Can you work on a team?
3
Many people already work from home, but they still need to work well with others. In the future,
40 percent of people will work from home, and teams may be in different parts of the country or
anywhere in the world. This means you need to be able to work by yourself and as part of a team.
Question 3: Can you change?
4 You learn to do a job. You learn to do it well. But then the plan changes, or there is a new program
for your computer. It makes your life difficult. Can you stay calm and learn to do your job the new
way? In the future, you will need to learn things again and again.
Question 4: Can you lead?
5
In the past , many jobs were about saying "yes" to the manager . In the future, they will need
leaders—people who can lead others. Leaders plan their work and help others plan theirs. They help
a team reach its goals.
Question 5: Can you write and speak well?
6 Writing and speaking will always be important. Good communication skills are already necessary,
but in the future, they will be even more important.
7 In 2030, you will need to be able to answer "yes" to all of these questions.

service. People will stream TV shows,
sports, and movies when they want.
Many already do. TV advertisements
won't go away. However, they will be
much shorter: about six seconds will be
the new normal.
3 Virtual reality (VR) is a way of making
people feel that they are in a movie, in
an unusual place, or at a music concert.
VR headsets will sell in the millions in the future. Augmented reality (AR) will also become very popular. AR
works with special glasses and apps. It adds different types of digital information to the real world. These
changes may make activities like shopping more enjoyable and interesting.
4
Music streaming is already a trend, but it will get much faster with new technology. You won't have to
wait to get your song, and the library of available songs will be very large. To help you choose, your phone
will know where you are, and it will give you the best music for the moment. Live music will also grow. Music
groups, or bands, will make most of their money this way because streaming won't pay them a lot.
5 Will the changes be good or bad? Nobody knows. However, we do know that there will be a different
world of entertainment for our children and our children's children.

Dear Louise
I am so worried. I don't know what to do. I heard my parents talking last night. My father has been
offered a new job which pays more and is very interesting. It's a great chance for him, but this
is bad news for me as the job is in the countryside. I have good friends and I like my school and
teachers. I don't want to leave and start again in another place. What am I going to do?
Joanne
