Get Your House In Order 2 Kings 20:1-2 Is your house in order? What would you do if you were told by the Lord, that you are going to die and not live? We read of an interesting account in the life of a great king in Israel. Hezekiah faces the same fate that every king previous and every king that would follow him would face. As a matter of fact, the Bible tells us that it is appointed unto man once to die. That means that every one of us has an appointment that was made by God, and that appointment is with death. Now we might not want to think about this, but it is still true. One day (and we don't when that might be) God will say that it is enough. He will call us to our appointment with death. Nothing can change that fact, but how we face that appointment is up to us. Let's consider how Hezekiah dealt with the news that he was to die. Someone has right said “we are living in the land of the dying and going to the land of the living” So significant "Get your House In Order!" -This was the message from God through the Prophet Isaiah to King Hezekiah who was sick unto death. Oh what a message to deliver!!!! Hezekiah received a warning that said "get your house in order" because death is knocking at your door. Having heard the voice of God through the Prophet, Hezekiah prayed to God. 2 Then he turned his face toward the wall and prayed to the Lord, saying,3 “Please, O Lord, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with an undivided heart and have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed. What did Hezekiah know about God? God was evaluating the future by looking at the present Hezekiah knew that prayer changes things. Because King Hezekiah made God the #1 priority in his life and was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, God showed him favor and mercy by adding 15 more years to his life. VS-6………………………..15 more years to be under reign of a righteous king. 15 yrs. from now would be July 26, 2037. If that were to be your fate and mine what would you do with it? Getting "our house in order" MUST become a priority in all of our lives. The question to be answered on today by all of us is when our time come to die, "will our house be in order?" Our birth date can be estimated almost down to the wire, but not our death date. The minute, day and hour of our death is unknown to man, but known to God. Job 14:5 A person's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed. Will you be ready? Will your house be in order? Philosopher and writer Will Durant was quoted in Time Magazine as saying “In my youths I stressed freedom, and in my old age I stress order. I have made the great discovery that liberty is a product of order.” To put our house in order is to put the essential elements our life. There are 3 essential elements in our life that we must “Get in Order” as we seek to glorify God and fulfil His purpose for our lives OUR FAITH IN ORDER: In both of the accounts given of this dialogue, there is not one indication that Hezekiah thanks God. God granted him 15 more years, and He delivered Hezekiah and the city from the Assyrians. But nowhere do we find a word of thanksgiving for all that God had done for him. It seems he lived each of the additional years thinking only of his self. (God extended Hezekiah’s life by 15 years but regrettably Hezekiah used those years for his own selfish endeavours rather than for God’s glory. How sad when divine favours is prostituted and used for self-centred ends) Tragic, yes, but not so different from us today. God has blessed us so much, and yet how often we live our lives without thought of those blessings. How is your relationship with God? How is your walk with Him? It is not how it was, but what it is now? Your past doesn’t define you present OUR FAMILY IN ORDER Apparently at this time Hezekiah had no heir. His Son Manasseh was not born until 3 years after this time. During those additional years, Hezekiah had a son born unto him. His name was Manasseh. He would take the throne and become the most evil and vile king that ever reigned over Israel. Hezekiah totally failed to teach his Son to follow in His steps. (2Ki 20:6) and I will add to thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. (2Ki 21:1) Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hephzibah. Though Hezekiah had 15 years advanced warning, his 12 yrs. son succeeded him and he was among the evil/worst king in Israel history. (2 Chr 33:9) "So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel." What about your family? Are you taking care of your family? Getting our house in order means making sure that we address these matters which pertain to the care of our families. (1Ti 5:8) But if any one does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever. Hezekiah did not train His son in the fear of God We may be a man/woman of integrity, faithfully serving the Lord but what we are doing for the next generation- children not walking in the ways of the Lord. Preparing the next generation- The priority for me is not my church, my ministry but my family. OUR FINANCES/RESOURCES IN ORDER While his body improves, the speed of his spiritual decline escalate in a hurry. When the king of Babylon hears about Hezekiah’s miraculous recovery, he sends some to congratulate on his healing. Instead of giving glory to God for his deliverance, he showed all of his treasures he’s accumulated over his life. (2Ki 20:13) And Hezekiah hearkened to them, and shewed them all his treasure-house, the silver and the gold, and the spices and the fine oil, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found among his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah did not shew them. He’s taken God’s favour, twisted it into an opportunity to display his own pride. Are we exalting self or God? CONCLUSION: Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Hezekiah had two opportunities to do this, and failed to accomplish this task. What about us? Whose plan are we following? Is our house in order? Think about it!
