ACADEMIC STRESS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PAKISTAN
SUMMARY
In this study, high school students' academic stress will assessed. We will employ the normative survey
method in this investigation. 200 X students from District Vehari in Punjab, Pakistan make up the sample.
The technique of stratified random sampling will be employed to choose the sample. The Academic Stress
Scale will completed by the students. To determine the significance of the relationship between student
academic stress and gender, age, and location, a T test will be used.
INTRODUCTION
High school education is a critical turning point in an individual's academic life. At this point, the academic
performance of the youth/adolescents is critical in determining the next higher level of education and, most
likely, career. As a result, excessive stress during this stage may increase the prevalence of psychological
problems such as depression and nervousness, which may have a negative impact on the outcome of the
achievements. Academic stress is defined as mental distress related to some anticipated frustration
associated with academic failure or even the possibility of such failure. Students must deal with a variety
of academic burdens/loads, such as school examinations, answering questions in class, and demonstrating
progress in school subjects. Understanding what the teacher is teaching, competing with other classmates,
and meeting the academic expectations of teachers and parents. These demands may tax or exceed the
students' available resources. As a result, they may be stressed because the demand is related to achieving
an academic goal. So, academic is related to achieving an academic goal. Academic stress is a significant
factor in explaining variation in academic achievement.
NEED FOR THE STUDY
In today's world, academic stress is a major issue in student life. Our educational system has put students
under a lot of pressure, such as a large curriculum, exam anxiety, neck-to-neck competitions, and so on.
Peer and parental pressure exacerbates their situation significantly. According to the findings of doctors,
psychotherapists, and child psychologists, students, particularly secondary school students, experience
anxiety, stress, and depression as a result of academic pressure, and excessive academic pressure is
associated with intentional self-harm and even suicide. As a result, the researcher chose this study to find
better solutions, provide guidance, and plan strategies to help teachers, parents, and students cope with
academic stress.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Stress contributes significantly to the prediction of subsequent student performance and acts as a
negative predictor of student academic performance. The study will aid in the implementation of
some critical recommendations regarding academic stress. Proper care should be taken in assisting
them in making the right decisions that may affect their future. Anxiety reduction and time
management, combined with recreational activities, may be an effective strategy for reducing
academic stress in college students. Students should have aspirations/expectations for their studies
that are within their capacities and abilities. Students also require proper counselling when
selecting courses at the intermediate level. Parents should also consider their child's interests and
aptitude before imposing on course selection. The family environment should be friendly, and the
learning process should be enjoyable, rather than a stressful event for adolescents. The author
concludes that a supportive and stimulating environment is critical for students to progress in their
academic lives and achieve their objectives.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To investigate high school students' academic stress.
2. To investigate the significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on
gender.
3. To investigate the significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on
their age.
4. To investigate the significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on
their location.
HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY
1. There is no significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on gender.
2. There is no significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on age.
3. There is no significant mean difference in academic stress among high school students based on their
location.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The investigators used normative survey method to study the social maturity among school students.
Sample and Sampling Methods:
The current study will involve a total of 200 X std. students. It is made up of four schools in the district of
Vehari, Punjab, Pakistan. The stratified random sampling technique will be used to select samples. The
stratification will be based on their age, gender, and location.
Tool:
Researcher will collect data using the following tools.
Rajendran and Kaliappan created and validated the Academic Stress Scale (1990). It is made up of 40 items
and 5 sub dimensions. The scale's items are all positive. A five-point likert scale is used to score each item.
Data collection:
Researcher will personally visit four schools in the district of Vehari, Punjab, Pakistan, to collect data from
the students. The data will be collected using the chosen tool. The tool will be distributed to students at the
school, and I assure them that their responses will be kept confidential and used solely for research purposes.
Clear instructions will be given to enable them to respond meaningfully. The responses gathered will be
graded.
Statistical Analysis:
The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential methods. The statistical techniques-'T'
test-will be used for data analysis and interpretation.
CONCLUSION
The main source of stress for students will be a lack of adequate support. There are numerous personal and
social factors that contribute to student stress. Academic pressure, extracurricular activities, assignments,
and so on have all increased beyond all recognition. Parents expect their children to participate in the rat
race and outperform their competitors in order to raise their own social status in society. Running behind
the numbers is the new fad in this age of cutthroat competition, a sad but true reality. Every child is unique,
so it is important for parents to instil in their children the importance of identifying their strengths and
encouraging them to pursue a career in their area of ability. It is critical to either do what you love or love
what you do. Managing time effectively and ensuring that at least one physical exercise is done on a daily
basis can help to reduce stress and improve attention span, allowing you to be more productive in school.
