Natalie Lechner Develop a Plan First Grade Team Writing Plan What Would be a Valuable Goal for Gathering/Assessing Student Work Samples? First Grade Team Goal & Process for collecting & analyzing work: We could start with a prompt that we all agree on. Maybe, “Think about a fun time or trip you have been on? Write about this experience”. We could briefly discuss this in a PLC meeting and by the following meeting we would share samples. We could make a list of what we are noticing in our students’ work. Then, establish a goal for their writing. Key questions that could be used to analyze work: Are the students answering the prompt? Are they providing reasons and examples? How are the students structuring their writing?... opening, details/examples, closing How often should this happen? We could discuss any questions/suggestions we have based on writing bi-weekly. I think once we establish a goal and analyze work, we could thoroughly discuss what we are seeing once a month. Maybe the first meeting of the month is brief with quick feedback, then the second meeting could be the in-depth meeting. This could be adjusted based on what we feel we need. How would the teachers involved feel about doing this? I honestly think they would feel overwhelmed. We all acknowledge that we struggle in writing, but I think they would find it difficult to add this “responsibility”. I think they would also question what our admin would say regarding following our curriculum. Sometimes our admin is picky about us bringing anything in that isn’t already found in following our curriculum.
