Objectives
• Describe the lifestyle of the Kalinago People
• Examine the agriculture system
What did they eat?
• Manioc (cassava) was a very important foodstuff.
• Women washed and grated it on small boards covered
with sharp, chipped stones.
• Sweet potatoes and sweet manioc were roasted over the
fire.
• Yam and maize were also roasted, but maize was often
pounded into a meal.
• Peas from wild vines were made into soup
• Agouti, manicou, birds and fish were smoked over fires on
a grill made of sticks.
• Clay pottery bowls and jars were used for cooking and
holding water and ouicou (a type of manioc beer
for drinking at feasts.)

Farming
• Kalinago grew tobacco, cotton, cassava, yam, sweet potato and
maize.
• Cotton was spun and wove into small strips of cloth.
• Cotton was also used to make string for fishing lines and nets
and for hammocks.
• Farming plots were made some distance from the village.
• The men burned the trees and bushes and cleared the land.
• The women planted the crops and tended to them.

Fishing
• The Kalinago used bows and arrows to shoot fish
which came close to the surface.
• They used nets, traps and fishing lines with hooks
made of shells.
• Lobsters were caught in the reefs with harpoons.
• Conch and other shellfish were easily caught.
• The shells were used to make tools.
• They knew how to poison the river pools by
pounding the leaves of certain plants and mixing
them into the water.
Hunting
• The Kalinago hunted with bows and arrows.
• Hunting was also a sport.
• They used arrows made from slender reeds with tips
made of sharp wooden heads.
Canoes and the sea
• The Kalinago travelled back and forth among the
islands and were excellent seamen.
• They knew how to use the stars at night to find
their way.
• Describe the canoes used by the Kalinago (pg.
97 in the text).
