Dance as an Art- Is a rhythmic and expressive movement of the body in successive movement usually accompanied by music. It has been said to be mother of the arts, for it’s the oldest of the art which actually reflects man’s age old need to communicate different emotions such as joy, grief, excitement and others. IV. Features of Dance 1. Music – It is closely related to dance for it plays a significant role in it. It is used as accompaniment that somehow motivates the dancer’s movement. 2. Movement – It refers to action of dances with the use of their bodies to create organized patterns. 3. Theme – It pertains to the content or main ingredient of the dance. It actually conveys the message of the dance. 4. Techniques – It refers to the skill in executing movement. As a danger, one needs to have a complete control over the muscles of his body for him to be said technically proficient. 5. Design – It refers to the arrangement of movements according to pattern in time (either fast or slow) and space (one’s position in relation to his background). 6. Properties and Costume – These contribute to the visual effect of dance. The costumes can somehow relate to the beliefs and environment of people. V. Kinds of Dance Ethnologic Dance – This is a dance that indigenous to a certain race or country. The term ethnic is used to distinguish religious dances, and designed as hymns of praise to a God, or to bring on good fortune in peace and war. 0 0 Social Dance – These are popular type of dancing for pleasure a generally performed by pairs or group of people following a definite step or pattern. Most of these have specific rhythms and coordinated with the movement and steps of the body, hand, foot and head. o Ballroom Dance – It actually originated as square dance which was followed by waltz, tango, foxtrot, swing, etc. o Folk Dance- It usually derived from ethnic dances, People all over the world have their own folk dances as distinct to their specific culture. o Occupational Dance- depicting action of a certain occupation, industry or human labor (Example: planting, harvesting, pounding, winnowing, pabirik, Managuete,etc.). The Elements of Dance ● Time ● ● ● ● o Speed – Slow, Medium, Fast, Freeze, suspend o Rhythm – Pulse, Beat, Pattern, syncopation Space o Place – Personal, General o Size – Small, Medium, Big o Level – Low, Middle, High o Direction – Forward, Backward, Left, Right, Up, Down, Diagonal’ o Pathway – Straight, curved, zigzagged, turning. Energy – Light, Strong, Weak, Sharp, Smooth Weight – Light, Medium, Heavy Body – Shape: Lines, Curves, Angles, Various shapes Parts: head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, back, stomach, bottom, legs, fingers, toes. ● Movement Concepts Locomotor – walk, run, leap, hop, jump, gallop, slide, crawl, roll, creep, slither (Locomotion is the directional movement of the body that gives the authority to someone or something to move from one place to another) Non-Locomotor – bend, twist, stretch, reach, swing, push, pull, fall, melt, sway, turn, spin, dodge, kick, poke, carve, curl, lunge, slash, dab, punch, flick, float, glide, press, shake, rise, shrink, burst, wiggle, explode. (Kind of movements that does not need to transfer from one point to another) 0 0 Examples: Stretch- Causing a specific muscle to become longer than its normal length Curl- To form your body into a curved shape Lesson 3 Fundamental Step (Feet and Arm) Feet Positions ● 1st Position – heels closed together; toes apart making an angle of about ninety degrees. ● 2nd position – feet apart sideward of about pace distance. ● 3rd Position – Heel on one foot close to in-step of other foot. ● 4th Position – One foot in front of other foot of about a pace distance. ● 5th Position – Heel of front foot close to big toe of rear foot. Arm Positions ● 1st Position – Arms raised forward in a circle in front of chest with finger tips about an inch apart. ● 2nd Position – Arms raised sideward with graceful curve a little below shoulder level. ● 3rd Position – One arm raised as in 2nd position, other arm raised overhead. ● 4th Position – One arm raised in front of chest in a half-circle, other arm raised overhead. ● 5th Position – both arms raised overhead. 0 0 Lesson 4 DANCE (CARIÑOSA) is a dance made for flirting!
