Introduction The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) outlines the nature and purpose of each subject. This guides the philosophy underlying the teaching and assessment of the subject. The purpose of these Examination Guidelines is to provide clarity on the depth and scope of the content to be assessed in the provincial common examination in November 2016. These Examination Guidelines should be read in conjunction with: 2. The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) and the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) The National Protocol of Assessment: An addendum to policy document, the National Senior Certificate: A qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), regarding the National Protocol for Assessment (Grades R–12) The national policy pertaining to the programme and promotion requirements of the National Curriculum Statement, Grades R–12 Scope This guideline is applicable to all Public Ordinary and Independent Subsidized Schools offering the CAPS in Grade 11. This guideline will only be applicable to provincially set question papers. 3. Skills required in answering questions Learners must be encouraged to: 3.1 Read through the question paper carefully before attempting to answer the questions. 3.2 Make notes of thoughts or ideas that may come to mind on certain questions at the back of the answer book. This exercise can be a useful memory trigger when they eventually answer the questions. 3.3 Read all the headings and instructions carefully. 3.4 Engage with resources such as case studies, extracts, cartoons, pictures, articles, texts, etc. because application of the content is one of the skills required in most subjects. Grade 11 November 2016 Provincial Examination Guidelines Page 4 of 14 3.5 Study each resource, whether it is a cartoon, text, table, question, graph or chart: What is it about? What is it telling them? What part of their knowledge does it relate to? 3.6 Consider the mark and time allocation when determining the length of their responses. 3.7 Present neat and legible writing. (Includes multiple-choice; matching columns and concepts) Marking guidelines are indicated on the various memoranda. The marking of calculations, graphs, etc. are provided with guidelines. Allocate marks for full sentences only, where required in the various questions. Calculations – candidates must do these in tabular form, listed below each other, indicating the relevant words and corresponding figures. (These are new requirements by National Examinations for Economics.) Essays – these require some higher-order thinking (own views) from candidates. Section B: (Choice of questions – answer TWO from three questions given) All the questions are weighted equally, covering the above topics for P1. Question 2 – Macroeconomics (40 marks) Question 3 – Economic pursuits (40 marks) Question 4 – Combination of Macroeconomics and Economic Pursuits (40 marks) Candidates must only answer TWO of the three questions given – if all three are answered, educators must only mark the first two questions, as instructed. Section C: (Essays) (Answer ONE of the two given essays) Educators must only mark the first essay attempted, as instructed in the question paper. One essay will be from Macroeconomics and the other from Economic Pursuits. Additional part – this is a higher-order type of question – the candidates perform poorly in this section. (Educators to practise these at school.) Grade 11 November 2016 Provincial Examination Guidelines Page 11 of 14 Paper 2: Calculations must be done as indicated for the requirements in Paper 1 above. (Refer to the above comments on Paper 1, which are also applicable to Paper 2) 6. General Educators must expose the candidates to the new examination structure and higher order type of questions asked since November 2015. Use past papers (Grades 11 and 12 – November 2015) as general guidelines. Candidates still do not know how to correctly structure essays. Calculations, as well as a general lack of knowledge of basic concepts from Grade 10 are still causing problems. Grade 11 November 2016 Provincial Examination Guidelines Page 12 of 14 6. Conclusion This guideline document is meant to articulate the assessment aspirations as espoused in the CAPS document. It is therefore not a substitute for the CAPS document which must guide teaching and learning. Qualitative curriculum coverage as enunciated in the CAPS cannot be over-emphasised.
