Amal Masad Informational interview HDV-111-004 Alexander Resendez informational interview In this assignment I was asked to interview a person whom I believed had the career that I would like to acquire. For me that is a job as a principal. I chose that career because I think it's underrated and very interesting and important. I believe I would make a great fit for the job and let me explain why. Who is the person I interviewed? I interviewed Dr. Kelly Marie Tough, principal at Brodnicki elementary school. What are your primary responsibilities? “I am the face of the school, I am responsible for supervising the teachers, children, activities, attending meetings, and overall keeping the school curriculum on track” How do you spend your time? “Being a principle at a school doesn’t allow you to have much of a social life, work tends to be all you have time for, often nights I stay up late nights trying to catch up on some work” What are the most valuable skills in your job? “Being on time, being there, having good relationships with all your colleagues, being a good speaker, and listener” What attracted you to this industry, career, your company, and your job? “At first, I was a kindergarten teacher for a few years, after that, I soon realized I didn’t want to be in that position for the rest of my life. I decided to further my education while also teaching so I chose to get my principal's degree to be in the administration office. However, I was offered a position as an assistant principal, and I took the offer.” What school did you attend? “I got my degree from saint Xsavier university, however I started off as a educator, I worked for a year and knew immediately I didn’t want to be an educator for long. So I futhred my education.” What motivates you in this career? “the fact that I will retire soon, the chance I might make a big difference in the lives of the students.” What are some ways I can become familiar with this type of job? “well actually there is a job opening at our site for a paraprofessional and I believe you would be a great fit. Also, teaching is a great way to start.” How would you say is your relationship with the teachers at your school? “Very respectful, your job is to micromanage their moves as well as intel different ways of teaching and without saying anything disrespectful along the way. But our job is to look at how the school is doing, and we must be upfront and confrontational to get the school moving. “ Any traits you think helped you to be better at the job? “i believe that being as professional as possible is important, speaking to others in groups, and one on one. There is a lot put on your plate so time management is very important and staying organized is key. Ideas, planning, initiative, and just caring is a big part of it.” Is there anything else you might recommend to me? “ I would say trust yourself, if this is what you want and think you can handle you are fit for the job.” What skills did you obtain only after starting the job? Being louder, firmer, listening, speaking to other new people and just representing the best you. Do you ever feel like you're not doing enough? All the time, but that’s where you must draw the line between life and work. Is being overly obsessed with the job something I have struggled with? How does retirement work? “So, I have been a teacher for a few years, principal at a small school for 15 years, and currently a principal here for 6 years, in three years I am going to retire, when you work in a school they start a 401k for you, and you are able to just save for retirement”
