Professional Practice DB’s Week 1: Please refer to grading rubric for details and expectations. Part 1: Briefly describe a time when you experienced or witnessed incivility (approximately 3 sentences). This could have been in the workplace, in the classroom or another time. I was a Certified Nurse Aid at an assisted living facility on the weekends during college. I was usually in building two, but I was scheduled to work in building one with a coworker that I had briefly met before. I was nervous to work with someone new to me and take care of residents that I never worked with before. For the first few hours, things went smoothly. We got the residents dressed and ready for breakfast and she, a med tech, gave out morning medications. One resident did not want to have the pancakes that the kitchen was serving that day because he did not want to have sugar. He did not have any medical diet restrictions. My coworker yelled at this man for five to ten minutes over something as simple as getting something else to eat to the point that he was crying and very embarrassed. Part 2: What was the impact of this incivility on learners/colleagues/patients/etc? How can you respond to uncivil behavior in a respectful manner and promote civil communication strategies? While she was yelling at him, I discussed an alternative meal with the cook, who was also very uncomfortable with the situation. I called the other building’s med tech and nurse aid, who advised me to write a formal report to give to the director. They had me work in my regular building for the rest of the shift because I was very uncomfortable with the situation. Ultimately, she was fired. Sometimes, I wonder if I should have said something to her directly, but I think that may have made matters worse given how angry she was. The CUS model may have been appropriate in this situation to help me talk to her. For example, I am concerned that the resident is crying due to the communication between the two. I am uncomfortable with the tone in your voice when you are talking to him. This is unsafe for the patient’s mental/emotional health and physical well-being. POST: Please respond thoughtfully (approximately 250 words) to these prompts. Part 1 should include approximately 3 well written sentences. Part 2 should include approximately 4 well written sentences and at least 1 reference (this can include the ATI module). ***INITIAL POST DUE 6/29/22*** RESPONSE: Reply to one classmate's post with a well written and respectful response (approximately 150 words). ***RESPONSE DUE 7/5/22***
