. Mark Twain . Edgar Allan Poe . Sylvia Plath . F. Scott Fitzgerald . Walter Whiteman . Emily
Dickinson . Stephen King . Maya Angelo . Edith Wharton . Alice Walker
The link used presented the 10 most famous American authors. The information was taken
from: https://www.discoverwalks.com/blog/united-states/10-of-the-most-famous-americanauthors/
2) If you had to read a book from one author on the list, which author would you choose and why?
If I had to read one book from the selected authors, I would read Stephen King since his books
allow me -as a reader- to deeply bond with the characters, whether they are the protagonist or
antagonist, because King is able to portray the hardships and human characteristics in
characters, making it difficult not to relate and sympathize with them.
3) What was the first American book? Give some brief details about the book.
The first written book in 1789 is William Hill Brown’s The Power of Sympathy, also known as the
Triumph of Nature. The book is an epistolary novel and focuses on the dangers of passion and
seduction by following a story of an incestuous relationship while promoting self-control and
preventing such pitfalls in life.
4) Name 2-3 famous American female writers.
. Emily Dickinson . Willa Cather . Kate Chopin
5) Choose one of the writers and summarise her life and work, in particular mention what
challenges she faced on her path to success.
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was an American poet born on December 10 1830 in Amherst,
Massachusetts and died on May 15 1886. Emily lived a hard life full of sadness, illness, and
isolation. Emily expressed herself through her heart-wrenching and deep poetry; however, her
only way of self-expression was not accepted by her father and the community in general. That
led her to publish her work anonymously, which is why she was not known during her lifetime.
6) What are some of the most famous movie adaptations of American novels?
. F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (1925); Baz Luhrmann (dir.), The Great Gatsby (2013)
. L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900); Victor Fleming (dir.), The Wizard of Oz
(1939)
7) If you had to watch a movie from the list, which author would you choose and why?
If i had to watch a movie form the list, I would watch the Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum because
its a mystical story and allows the reader to escape reality with its characters and beautiful
display.
8) Who do you think is the most famous American writer in your country? What do people know
about them and why are they famous?
While it's not specified who is possibly the best American writer in Jordan, I believe that it is
Stephen King since the movie adapted from his book "IT" was one of the most popular movies in
the country, and after that, his books spread out through bookstores very quickly and became a
bestseller. After some time, other of his books gained attention, like "The Shining" and "The
Mist."
