Renewable Energy Project INTRODUCTION Attention students! Prime Minister Trudeau needs your help! Oil reserves around the world are crashing! Some of you may feel that this does not directly affect you at this time, but did you realize that gas, oil and petroleum-based products are an intrinsic part of your lives? This energy crisis is putting your generation is at great risk. Prime Minister Trudeau has asked for assistance from the future leaders of tomorrow in developing a solution. The Prime Minister would like to know what other forms of energy our nation could utilize so that we are no longer dependent on non-renewable resources. Please begin assisting him immediately! Your Prime Minster and your country are depending on you!! TASK You and your team will be assigned to investigate an alternative source of energy. Each team will have to research, make inferences, evaluate, and determine benefits and drawbacks of your assigned energy source. You and your team are going to set up your own energy company supplied by alternative energy resources. If you can establish your companies before the last fossil fuels are used, you will help lead the world to a future of cleaner, safer and more plentiful energy. Since the fossil fuels are almost gone, you must choose an alternative, renewable energy resource to generate power. This must be a resource that will be profitable here in Ontario and the rest of the country. You will use the Internet and other references to research your form of alternative energy. Decide which resource you will use to start up your new business. You will be given two weeks to complete your research. Every student will be awarded daily points for completed work, staying on-task (focused and not visiting other groups), final products shown to teacher, etc. (See attached rubric for more information.) WEBQUEST (Day 1-5 of research) To become an expert in your field of alternative energy, you must gather information. Begin by using the given resources to choose your area of expertise. Gather as much information as you can. Be sure to answer the questions given, but do not limit your knowledge to them. Take good notes, and be prepared to defend your resource 1. How does your resource generate power? How does it work? (Provide an explanation with a diagram, drawing, or series of diagrams/drawings) 2. What is the history of your energy resource? How long has it been in use? 3. Where is it being used right now? 4. What are the positive benefits? 5. What are the negative consequences? 6. How efficient would this resource be in producing energy? 7. Where would be the ideal location in Canada to set up your company? 8. Is this energy source available in your community? 9. Is it available in your province? 10. What is the cost of this energy source? Daily, yearly? Home? Province? (ESTIMATE) 11. How is this energy source delivered/supplied to consumers? (How does it enter the house? The schools? The buildings? How does it work?) 13. Could this new energy source have an effect on transportation? If so, how? 14. Does it contribute to any form of pollution? Land? Water? Air? Noise? Does it help fix pollution? 15. Will it be easy to assimilate into our lives? How will you convince the public to use this form of energy? ADVERTISEMENT (Day 6-9 of research) Create an advertisement for your business that is informative and memorable. You may create a brochure, poster, television commercial, or any other type of advertisement. Make sure to give information about your energy source and the benefits you would offer. You will use this advertisement in your presentation. COMPILING AND ORGANIZING DATA (Day 10-13 of research) Remember to create a summary (slide/page/piece of paper) to complete your project. State what you learned from this project and give your final convincing statement as to why your company has presented the winning argument. PRESENTATIONS (Day 14) As a group, discuss the information gathered from our resources and pick the specific form of energy you will utilize in your new business. You must then prepare a sales pitch to present to the class. You will be competing with other groups to sell your energy. In your presentation, the following three questions must be addressed. 1. Why is a business offering an alternative energy resource necessary at this time? 2. Why should your company be chosen over other businesses that utilize different energy sources? 3. Why should your company be chosen over others using the same source of energy? Convince your teacher that your alternative energy source and company is the best choice for a new power provider. Presentations must last a minimum of five minutes. You may present with a power point, keynote presentation or poster board presentation. You have to present this in a formal method, business professional. You may choose to dress up (like a job interview.) Try to do anything to persuade the Prime Minister to choose your alternative energy source. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN YOUR PRESENTATION (DAY 3 and 4) You have established your company and are ready to start selling power. µ Build a small model of how your energy will be used (i.e. solar energy=solar powered home/car.) Alternative Energy Rubric The project will be at total of 100 points. Please look at your rubric every day we research, so you can keep track of how many points you are earning.
