Running out of chips - The Auto Industry’s Big Challenge
Description:
In this project, we will look at the semiconductor shortage affecting the auto industry. We will
analyze the impact to consumer and the auto industry, then understand the causes behind this
crisis. We then look at how the auto industry is weathering the chip shortage storm (with a case
study on Ford), and provide an outlook for the future.
Plan:
1. Overview of chip shortage impacting auto industry, including timeline, magnitude, and
varying degree of effect on different auto makers.
2. Look into factors that led to today’s chip shortage.
3. Consider a few car manufacturers strategy to combat the issue. Specifically, look into
Ford’s strategy by bringing some of chip production onshore, and analyze the pros and
cons of this strategy.
4. Give our prediction on where the auto industry will be in the next several years, and
when will the chip shortage issue ease.
