SECTION A: COMPREHENSION Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. TEXT A: Everyone thinks he had it all – but not always! 1. Walt Disney is probably most famous for the many lovable characters he created, like Mickey Mouse. Today the company he started is worth billions and includes 1 Disneyland, films and cartoons. But Walt was not always as successful as the business he founded is today. 2. Walt Disney was one of five children in a family that was not very wealthy. From an early age, Walt showed an interest in art. He would often sell his drawings to neighbours to make extra money. Walt was encouraged by his mother and older brother, Roy, to pursue his talents. 3. When Walt was sixteen in 1918, he attempted to enlist in the army. Here he faced his first rejection – he was too young! This did not stop Walt Disney, who decided that he would join the Red Cross instead. He was sent to France and spent a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials. Naturally, his ambulance was completely covered with Disney Cartoons. 4. After Walt returned from France, he started a small company called Laugh-OGrams. This company eventually went bankrupt, and with only $20 and a suitcase, Walt headed for Hollywood to begin again. Here he started a company with his brother, and in 1926 Walt created a slightly successful cartoon character called Oswald the Rabbit. Now he tried to negotiate with Universal Studios, his distributor, for better rates for each new cartoon he drew. However, he was informed that Universal had obtained ownership of the Oswald character, and they refused to negotiate any better earnings with Walt. Instead, they hired Walt’s artists from under him! 5. Right away Walt Disney and his brother began to create a new character – Mickey Mouse. In 1927, they tried to get MGM studios to distribute Mickey Mouse, but they were told that the idea would never work; a giant mouse on the screen would terrify women! However, Walt persisted. 6. Some of his other famous films also started out with not much success: The Three little Pigs was rejected by distributors in 1933 because it had too few characters; Pinocchio in 1940 became so expensive due to the special effects it required, that it ended up losing a million dollars in its first release; the audience of Fantasia were disappointed by the lack of story; Walt soon realised Bambi (1942), a story about the love-life of a deer, was not suitable when the entire world was involved in war; and Pollyanna failed at the box office. 7. Despite Walt’s many trials, he learned from each setback, and continued to take even bigger risks. In 2010 his company was worth $35 billion! 2 Question 1: 1.1 For what is Walt Disney most famous? 1.2 How can you tell that ‘Walt Disney was probably going to make a living from his artistic abilities from an early age? 1.3 (1) Give a reason why Walt Disney’s ambulance would “naturally….be covered with cartoons”.
