CSE509 Quantitative Techniques in Construction Planning
Group Project
Presentation: 29/11/2019
Submission Deadline*: 1/12/2019
*All group reports must be submitted through Blackboard.
Project Scenario
Your team is working on bidding a project. The background of your organization is a medium
sized general contractor with strong history in heavy civil construction and public housing. The
target project is any public infrastructure work with estimated budget between HK$120~150
million (which is around 50% of the company’s annual turnover) and duration of 12 months. The
possible projects are summarized as follows.
◼
Partial works of Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong express
rail link (for example, foundation and piling, tunnel work, station etc.)
◼
Partial works of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge (for example, foundation, bridge
structure, tunnel work, artificial island, pavement etc.)
◼
Partial works of the Three-Runway System (for example, foundation and piling,
artificial island, pavement, station etc.)
◼
Partial works of the town development projects including North East New Territories
(NENT), New Development Areas (NDAs) and Hung Shui Kiu NDA (for example,
settlement work, drainage channel, road and highway, sewage treatment plant etc.)
◼
Your team may choose other works if you like.
Group Project Requirement
Your group project should involve two major parts:
1. Please prepare a professional proposal (up to 6,000 words) and “at least” includes work
breakdown structure, detailed schedule, cost estimation (or bill of quantities), project control,
and other supplementary information you think that are important or relate to the bidding
proposal.
2. Please involve the systems/optimization analysis in the professional proposal. In general, three
types of analysis are considered appropriate: (1) development of new models/applications, (2)
design and implementation of solution algorithms, and (3) application and analysis of existing
models. Some sample topics include:
*Optimization of infrastructure project selection
*Optimization of construction equipment selection
