Independent Reading Projects ELA 11 You will be responsible for reading and completing 1 Independent Reading Project per Quarter (per 9 weeks.) You are welcome to turn in projects early as you finish novels, as well as completing a separate novel and project for extra credit (maximum of 2.) For each novel you finish, you must choose one of the following projects to showcase and demonstrate your understanding of the novel. You will also do a short memo style reflection to go with each novel you complete and to introduce your project work. Be sure to check the description of the project and the grading rubrics as you work and feel free to ask questions if you are unsure about the directions. Both the reflective write-up and project are due at the same time. Project options **Remember that you must complete one of the following projects. Option #1: Book Mosaic 1. Students will complete a 24 tile book mosaic to display their knowledge and overall feeling towards their selected novel. Use the following directions, and displays within the classroom to assist with any questions. Your mosaic should be colorful and creative. Avoid black & white unless you can justify it with the mood of the story. (5 pts) 2. Your mosaic should have a minimum of 24 tiles that are organized in the same pattern as the sample book mosaic .(5 pts) 3. The following categories are on the book mosaic: (20 pts) Title & Author of the book 2 Pictures of the Main Character 3 Pictures of the setting Picture of the author Significant event (Image or explain) 2 “You Pick” tiles (be creative) 5 important, meaningful quotes with page numbers and speaker listed 3 vocabulary words with definitions and page numbers from your book 3 pictures of something important to the main character 2 statements of conflict (state if it is internal or external) Image of the main character’s best friend 4. At least 12 of the tiles must be created by you. The images should be an equal mix of photographs and drawings (10 pts) Option #2: Scrap Book Collect pictures that go with your book and create a scrapbook. It must consist of 10 pictures & pages. Captions of 5-7 sentences should be used to describe the significance of the pictures used. Some examples of book page topics could be characters, setting, important objects, major events, about the author, etc. Option #3: Newspaper Editor create a newspaper for your book. Summarize the plot in one article, cover the weather in another, do a feature story on one of the characters and an article on a recent event. Include a collection of ads that would be pertinent (seen within) to the story. The newspaper must be a newspaper format. It needs to be at least 2 pages (front & back counts as 2). Be sure to include headlines and captions under pictures. The newspaper should replicate an actual newspaper. Option #4: Build the set Build a miniature stage setting of a scene in the book. Include a written a 100 word explanation of the scene and how it relates to the book. Be sure to talk about how the setting affects the characters and themes of the book. This 3 dimensional project should show all details and tell us about the story through personal belongings or scenery selected. Option #5: Blockbuster Movie Poster Create a movie poster for your book. Make sure to provide a character list, movie rating, director, and movie soundtrack of 10 songs. The songs chosen must be representative of the chosen novel. On a separate TYPED sheet of paper you will explaining why each song was chosen, and how it connects to your novel. Your novel poster must include color and show that you have done more than simply copied the cover of
