HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY - BASED LEARNING MATERIAL
Welcome to the module Perform light vehicle pre-starting and warm-up.
This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete.
You are required to go through learning activities in order to complete each
learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets,
Self-Checks, Task Sheets and Job Sheets. Follow these activities on your own. If
you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.
The goal of this module is the development of practical skills. To gain these
skills, you must learn basic concepts and terminology. For most part, you’ll get
this information from the Information Sheets.
This module is prepared to help you achieve the required competency, in
Driving NC ll.
This will be the source of information for you to acquire knowledge and skills
in this particular competency independently and at your own pace, with minimum
supervision or help from your instructor.
Remember to:
Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section.
Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references
are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.
Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/she
is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things.
You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice on the
job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work shift. This way
you will improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
Use the Self-checks, Operation Sheets or Job Sheets at the end of each
section to test your own progress.
When you feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, ask your
Trainer to evaluate you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in your
Progress Chart and Accomplishment Chart.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-3
WARMING UP LIGHT VEHICLE ACCORDING TO
MANUFACTURER’S MANUAL
Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you must be able to:
1. Identify different types of light vehicles
2. You are required the light vehicle warm-up according to manufacturer’s
manual.
Introduction:
When the engine is cold, the combustion is uneven and poor; the carb chokes
off some of the air to compensate and runs richer, but less efficiently. As things
heat up, everything starts to improve, and once the car is warm enough, the fuel
can properly vaporize, and the car starts to idle and run smoothly. This information
sheet deals with the methods used in warming up light vehicles.
1. Types of Light Vehicle:
a. Private Car

Owner-type jeepney are refurbished cars from military units used in WW2.
A typical owner-type jeep has a body shell made of galvanized iron or
stainless steel, with either a plain exterior or decked out in body graphics. It
seats up to six occupants, with a driver and passenger in front, and four rear
passengers facing each other).
c. Taxicab

Public Utility Jeepney sometimes called simply jeeps, are buses and the most
popular means of public transportation in the Philippines.
2. Steps for Properly Warming Up Light Vehicle
The trick to properly warming up light vehicle is to warm up its engine only
as long as it takes to make the car comfortable and safe to drive. Here’s what
you should do.
Step 1. Make sure your vehicle is an appropriate area for checking.
It should be out in the open air not in a garage.

Step 2. Switch on power of the vehicle.
Step 3. Check safety harness/devise and tools.
Step 4. Engage vehicle hand brake or put wheel chokes.
Step 5. Check the position of side and back mirrors
Step 6. Check the vehicle shifting lever in neutral position
Step 7. Let the engine run for maximum and back to normal then you can
drive the vehicle.
While the engine is running, observe the engine temperature gauge (Img.
2.1-3e) and oil indicator light (Img. 2.1-3f). The engine temperature gauge
pointer should not be pointing more than half of the gauge while the engine
is running otherwise your engine is overheating. Check also if the oil
indicator light in the dashboard is not lighted up once the engine is already
running otherwise you could have a low oil pressure or low oil level in your
engine.

Step 4. Start slowly and take it easy for the first 5-15 minutes.
A long period of idling your car can be bad for your engine. What will help is
remembering to start slowly and take it easy on the gas pedal for about 5-15
minutes when driving. Otherwise, you could stress out your engine before
it’s had time to reach its normal performance levels.
