The aim of these competition is to equip young students with the skills of thinking clearly, speaking persuasively and listening to the opinions of others critically and constructively. It enables young people to test and demonstrate their fluency in English. Furthermore, it was organized to provide young people with practical experience in the fundamental skills of public speaking and provide a focus for the learning of effective English and communication skills. The said contests were made possible through the initiative of the SHS English Coordinator Ms. Editha Ballesteros with the support of the School English Coordinator Mrs. Raquel Macusi and JHS English teachers; Mrs. Beatrice B. Apias and Ms. Kimberly Rose Tantay. The said competition was approved by Mrs. Marilou C. Bilagot, Principal III of LNHS. The extemporaneous speech was participated in by the Grade 11 students from different strands whereas, varied topics were given to them via draw lots. Each contestant was given 1 hour to prepare for their speech. Aside from the extemporaneous speech delivery, speech choir competition was also held on November 25,2022 where three groups from Grade 11 compete. The said English Olympics was done in classroom-based so not to disrupt any class. The focus of the spoken poetry is about self and family. Although the contests were just done inside the learners’ classroom, participants enjoyed performing. Indeed, in-person interaction with the teachers and classmates is still the best way to learn. Acquisition of knowledge and skills becomes easier and funnier when with others. The different activities conducted for the Senior High School Students, made each learners gain more self-esteem and more motivated to use English language not just to comply with their English subjects but to use it in daily conversation and communication.
