About this Resource
This resource is a unique way to get your students warmed up in the morning.
Each month contains 4-5 weeks of ELA morning work, which will have a theme
around the season, national holidays, or events associated with that particular
month. The morning work is focused on ELA 5th Grade Common Core Standards.
Each day has a thematic structure to cover those Language Standards as well as
enhance Vocabulary and Comprehension skills.
• Meaningful Monday: Monday is focused on making meaning. Tasks will focus on
synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary words, context clues, and making meaning in
a short amount of text. Some tasks may require students to make meaning in the
text (inference, message, adages, proverbs, etc.) or build vocabulary skills.
• Text Structure Tuesday: Tuesdays will have a paragraph that requires students to
identify the text structure, signal words, and a question or two related to main
idea, author's perspective, or vocabulary.
• Wordy Wednesday: Wednesday is all about working with words. Tasks include
working with shades of meaning, homophones, or a short writing task using
pictures or a word bank.
• Throwback Thursday: Thursday is all about grammar usage and conventions.
• Figurative Friday: Figurative Friday tasks include working with various types of
figurative language including similes, metaphors, idioms, and more!
I created this resource after seeing success with the Math version for 3rd grade that
you can find HERE!
I hope this resource works for you! Please be sure to FOLLOW US so you get the
email when the rest of this series comes out! J As we continue to work on the rest
of this series, we would love to hear what works for you. You can contact us at

Forms
*Before clicking any of the links in this file, be sure you are
signed into the Google Drive that you will use to share the files
with your students.
This digital version is in a Google Form format and self-grading.
Students will need their own Google account so you are able to
share each file with them. These assessments are for classroom
use only, and should NOT be placed on class web pages or
other sharing forums. Once you click the link, a screen will open
to prompt you to make a copy. The files will be in your own
Google Drive account.
Once you click the link, a screen will open to prompt you to
make a copy. The files will be in your own Google Drive
account. You can rename the file whatever you would like.
I also recommend making a folder for each month and then for
all of your weekly assessments so that you have easy access to
them.
Go to your Google Classroom and add an assignment. Select
either Assignment or Quiz Assignment.
Select your Google Form from the insert files.
Type a title for your assignment/quiz and assign.
Use the SEND button to email the form to your students
Students should click FILL OUT FORM from the email they
received. When the students submit the form, a grade will not
be shown until you choose to send it to everyone.
To grade the assessments, return to the form in your Google
Drive. Click on RESPONSES. They are set to auto-grade all of the
multiple choice questions. You will need to check any short
answer.
You can also change the amount of points if you choose to
do so. Once you have finished scoring each assessment,
click RELEASE SCORE. The student will receive an email with
the score, as well as the correct answers.
If you prefer students to NOT see the answers, you can
change this setting. Select the settings wheel in the top right
corner of the form. Then, uncheck “Correct Answers” under
the Quizzes section.
You can select the green Google Sheets icon on the form’s
response page to create a spreadsheet with all of the
responses and scores. This may be helpful to record the
scores, or collect data on the specific questions that
students were missing.
If students do not have email addresses, you can turn this
requirement off. However, there is not a way for you to
easily score, give grades, and allow students to view what
they missed. To turn off the required email, select the
settings wheel in the top right corner of the form. Then,
uncheck the box for “COLLECT EMAIL ADDRESS.”
*KEEP SCROLLING FOR YOUR LINKS!*
GOOGLE FORMS: For the Google Forms, each day of the week
has its own Google Form so that students can complete the
form in one sitting. A Google Form does not let you save your
responses and come back, so you will need to assign a form
each day of the week.
You can give a grade for each assigned day or combine their
daily responses for one weekly grade.

Veterans Day is a national holiday observed annually on November 11th. Veterans Day pays tribute to all

Before it was called Veterans Day, it was called Armistice Day. At the end of World War I, people wanted
to honor the troops who had served in the military. President Woodrow Wilson called this day Armistice
Day. An armistice is an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting. Later in 1954, the 83rd
Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day to include all soldiers who served their country.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a document to change Armistice day to Veterans Day.

When the Pilgrims sailed over from England on the Mayflower, they probably had no idea that the
Wampanoag would be helpful for their survival. The name Wampanoag is said to mean
“easterners” or “People of the Light.” They taught the Pilgrims to use fish for fertilizer and plant
maize(corn), beans, and squash. These crops are known as the Three Sisters.
The Wampanoag used storage pits to store food and seed during the winter. They dug deep holes
into the ground and lined them with stones and bulrush mats, woven mats from the leaves of a
bulrush plant.
In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims had a successful harvest. To show their gratitude, they invited the

Materials that allow heat energy to pass through them easily are called conductors. Iron,
copper, and aluminum are examples of conductors. Pots and pans are made of metals
so that heat can pass easily through them to cook food.
Unlike conductors, insulators are materials that do not allow heat energy to move
through them easily. This is why the handles of pots and pans are made of wood or
plastic. These materials do not allow heat to pass through easily. That’s the kind of
material you want to actually touch when you are cooking.

During the early 1500s, King Henry VIII created the Church of England. He told everyone in
England they must belong to this church. However, people wanted to worship in their own way.
A group of these people decided to separate from the church, so they were called Separatists.
One group decided to move to Holland so that they could worship freely. But they also wanted
a place where they could use their own language, customs, and religion and teach it to their
children. Because of this, they decided to set sail to the Americas to start the New England
Colony. This group came to be called the Pilgrims, which means people who travel for religious
reasons.

A group of these people decided to separate from the church, so they were called Separatists.
One group decided to move to Holland so that they could worship freely. But they also wanted

To show their gratitude, they invited the
Wampanoag to join them for their first Thanksgiving feast.

How did the author organize the text above?
a.

d.

by explaining the differences between conductors and insulators
by describing how conductors work
