Choose a drug of particular interest to you that you would like to research. The drug may be
either an OTC or prescribed medication. It can be of any classification and administered by any
route. Ensure that you have sufficient resources (3 sources required) to complete your
assignment.
1. Name and classification of the drug.
Name: Nitrofurantoin
Classification: Macrodantin
2. What are 3 common indications for this drug?
Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections.
This medicine is an antibiotic.
It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.
3. How often is it taken?



Adults and teenagers—50 to 100 milligrams (mg) every six hours for seven days.
Children and infants 1 month of age and older—Dose is based on body weight and must be
determined by your doctor.
Infants younger than 1 month of age—Use is not recommended.
The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of
doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine
depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.
4. By which route(s) is it taken?
Macrodantin is taken orally, it comes in the form of a capsule.
5. Are there any special instructions for administration?
Nitrofurantoin is best taken with food or milk. This may lessen stomach upset and help your body to
absorb the medicine.
To help clear up your infection completely, keep taking this medicine for the full time of treatment, even
if you begin to feel better after a few days. Do not miss any doses.

Changes in facial skin color
chest pain
chills
cough
fever
general feeling of discomfort or illness
hives
hoarseness
itching
joint or muscle pain
shortness of breath
skin rash
sudden trouble in swallowing or breathing

9. Why did you choose this drug to research?
I chose this drug because I used to suffer from urinary tract infection since I was a child, and the first
thing to came to my head was the generic name I used for years.
I wanted to know more about this drug and the side effects it has.
10. What was the most interesting fact you learned about this?
it helped me to have a guide about what to do or what to expect when I use them.
I used to have upset stomach because I didn’t eat enough.
I didn't know about all the red flags using this drug, it can develop lung inflammation warning, liver
problems and red blood damage cells. I used this drug for many years and I never been told about these
important warnings.
