CONSTRUCTIVE LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS OF TEACHERS WITH ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS Mrs. Dina T. Montoya Ph.D- EM Proponent RATIONALE Considering that teaching is a myriad of activities, that a teacher does not only instruct but also performs other functions to support the attainment of vision and mission of the school. It is a common scenario in public schools that teachers are given ancillary functions. Teachers with ancillary functions means that aside from being classroom teachers, they have other classroom related functions. Some of them could be designated as grade level coordinators, club moderators, clinic in-charge, school statistician, and canteen manager among others. Multiple ancillary functions of teachers lead towards losing their motivation, satisfaction, and competence, and even feel burn-out (Howard & Johnson, 2014). 2 Pedagogical Implications Improve instructional supervisory practices as vital factors for attaining academic success Develop a comprehensive program to develop the management skills of teachers with ancillary functions Help teachers address their many concerns in their field of work as both a teacher and a coordinator. Provide relevant information on how teachers can develop their management skills so they can better prepare for a better career and the future • Every teacher with ancillary functions will also be taught on how they can handle and manage their work properly. • Teachers design and conceptualize more learning activities and experiences for the pupils. 3 Theoretical and Conceptual Framework This study is based on the following theories: • skills theory • job enlargement theory • contingency approach • constructive development theory 4 The concepts derived from the different sources like books, journals, and studies conducted provided insights which made possible the emergence of a clear vision of the conceptual framework of this study. 1/4/2023 PRESENTATION TITLE 5 Research Methods and Procedure • Research Design Subjects of the Study Data Gathering Instruments Questionnaire Interview • Statistical Treatment of Data Frequency Percentage Weighted Mean F-test 6 Objectives 1. Describe the professional attributes of the teachers in terms of: 1.1 highest educational attainment 1.2 length of service 1.3 teaching assignment/load 1.4 ancillary functions 7 Findings: 1.1. Highest Educational Attainment. Most of the teachers with ancillary functions pursue advance studies in graduate programs. 1.2. Length of Service. Majority of the teachers with ancillary functions had been in the service for twenty years and above 1.3 Teaching Assignment Load. Majority of the teachers with ancillary functions had seven to eight units teaching load. 1.4 Ancillary Functions. Most of the respondents were holding two to three ancillary functions aside from their teaching load. 8 Objectives 2. Determine the respondents’ extent of manifestation of the constructive leadership relative to: 2.1 inter-intrapersonal relations 2.2 communication 2.3 coaching 2.4 teamwork 9 Findings 2.1 Inter-intrapersonal relations. Teachers, manifested skills in welcoming comments and feedbacks and accommodating with respectful attitude with others to a very great extent. 2.2. Communication. Teachers, manifested skills in accepting suggestions / opinions from colleagues and consider colleagues emotions when sending messages to a very great extent. 2.3 Coaching. Teacher manifested skills in supporting colleagues in the performance of an assigned task finding solutions to any identified problems, and informing colleagues of the tasks that they need to accomplished and their due dates to a very great extent. 2.4 Teamwork. Teachers manifested skills in establishing positive behavior among all team members and involving colleagues in decision making process to a very great extent. The composite mean revealed teachers’ manifestation of constructive leadership to a great extent in terms of teamwork. 10 Objectives 3. Ascertain the management skills of teachers in terms of: 3.1 planning and time management 3.2 technical competence 3.3 problem solving 3.4 decision making 11 Findings: 3.1 Planning and time management. Teacher evidently possesses management skill in involving themselves in planning the school activities and prioritizing tasks or projects that have an immediate deadlines. 3.2 Technical competence. Evident among teachers, the skill in using knowledge obtained from related trainings attended to the field of work. They also evidently provide consultancy support to colleagues. 3.3 Problem solving. Teacher, evidently possess skill in collaborating with others when addressing or giving solution to a problem. They also evidently manifested skill in establishing healthy exchange of opinions and ideas to grasp understanding of meaningful solution to a problem.. 3.4 Decision making. Teachers evidently possess skills in consulting school head and involving colleagues in making decisions and taking full responsibility in any decision.. 12 Objectives 4. Relate the professional attributes to the extent of manifestation of constructive leadership and management skills Findings: There are significant association found between the respondents’ highest educational attainment and the constructive leadership relative to communication, working and teamwork. More over, this also significantly associated to the management skills relative to planning and time management and teaching 1/4/2023 competence. 13 Objectives 5. Identify the problems met by teachers with ancillary functions Findings: Stress due to simultaneous deadlines and submission of reports and lack of time to rest and enjoy with family were some of the topmost problems that seldom met by the teachers with ancillary functions.. 14 Objectives 6. Propose strategies and activities to enhance leadership and management skills The proposed strategies is highlighted different activities that will enhance the leadership and management skills of teachers with ancillary functions particularly in areas of teamwork problem solving and decision making. 15 CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. Teachers with ancillary function have commendable professional characteristics and attributes. 2. There is an observable constructive leadership skills among teachers with ancillary functions making them able to perform daily tasks with enthusiasm and vigor. 3. Teachers manifested management skills in performing their duties of the ancillary functions assigned to them. 4. Enrolling in advance studies significantly influences the constructive leadership and management skills of teachers with ancillary functions. 5. Teachers seldomly met problems while they are performing their ancillary functions. 6. The proposed activities and strategies consists of objectives, activities and expected outcomes output to increase teachers’ leadership and management skills in performing their ancillary functions. 16 THANK YOU! 17
