Question 1(a): Identify roles and responsibilities following the Health and Safety Act at work. 3 marks Question 1(b): Name at least three regulations applicable to workshop welfare. 2 marks Taking into consideration the workshops below:A welding workshop; a metal turning workshop; and a milling machining workshop. Question 2(a): Describe and compare TWO hazards that one can encounter in EACH of such Workshops. 3 marks 1 Question 2(b): Describe ONE safe working practice for EACH of the above workshops 2 marks LO4 Explain the importance and relevance of the use of personal protective equipment. Question 3: Name and explain FIVE PPE from a wide range of working situations. You have to describe in what environmental conditions the PPE is used, and how they protect the user. 5 marks _____________________________________________________________ Question 4: With reference to the Health & Safety act at work 1974, justify the reasons why employers are to provide PPE to their workers. (The answer should not be shorter than 250 words.) 10 marks Question 5: Describe with the aid of pictures what suitable PPE is worn during workshop sessions. You must give at least FIVE situations where PPE are used. 5 marks ________________________________________________________________________ Question 6: Analyse how PPE is used to control hazards when conducting a risk assessment on a centre lathe. 7 marks End of assignment 2 Question 1) a) The health and Safety Act of Work says that everybody working in a workshop or workplace needs to make sure to protect everybody they can from every risk possible. To make sure that the dangerous and flammable things are used correctly and stored where it’s safe. To also control gases that are harmful to the environment so there won’t be unnecessary global warming. Employers need to also select people that are qualified for that type of job. Question 1) b) The workshop must have good lighting so that there will be less of a chance of somebody gets hurt and so they can see what they are doing otherwise they will get seriously hurt. They need to have a good housekeeping so that every worker reduces the injuries of them selves and others and so they could have everything organized in order to work better. The tools need to be checked by someone who is qualified so that every tool would work very good to make sure that the workers are safe using that tool. Question 2) a) In a welding workshop one could get an electrical shock it is unlikely (2) but it is extremely harmful (3) to you because the electric shock can kill you (2x3=6)High risk In a welding workshop one could suffer exposure to UV radiation if he is clumsy it is unlikely (2) but it is harmful (2) to you because you can go blind (2x2=4) Medium risk In a metal turning workshop one could suffer contact with metal chips or swarf but it is likely (3) and can be harmful (2) to you because it can cut you pretty easily (3x2= 6) High risk In a metal turning workshop one could suffer from entanglement with large moving parts but it is Highly unlikely (1) and Harmful (2) because you can get hit ( 1x2=2) Low risk In a milling machine workshop one could suffer from sharp cutters but it is unlikely (2) and harmful (2) because it can cut your finger pretty easily (2x2=4) Medium risk In a milling machine one could suffer from flying debris but is likely (3) and it is extremely harmful (3) because they can end up in your eyes or cut you (3x3=9) Extreme risk Question 2) b) In the Welding workshop you should consider the risks during welding and what can happen and to be prepared while working. In a metal turning workshop you should lean non the machine cause it will cause it damage and can hurt you while working. In a milling machine workshop you need to keep the cutters sharp and the machine in good condition so it won’t have troubles during cutting. Question 3) 3 Safety glasses/goggles- These are used to keep away pieces of metal, wood, plastic and a lot more materials out of your eyes and will protect your vision. Hard Hat- This is used to protect the head from impact from hard objects it is usually used in construction sites to protect them from small rocks that fall and this protects impacts on your head. Earmuffs- These are designed to reduce the amount of loud sound from your actual hearing so it doesn’t damage your ears during work. There are less of a chance that you damage you hearing. Safety shoes-This is used to keep your foot safe so you don’t crush your toes and it’s purpose is to protect from heavy objects and/or falling items Masks-This is used to protect you from fumes that are either toxic or bad for your body. This prevents dust from entering your mouse and nose. Question 4) In the Health and Safety Act 1974, employers are provided this information is to make sure that the employees they are going to hire are trained and know the risks of taking that job is. The employer also needs to provide the right training so that the employee can know what they are doing so that there won’t be any injuries. The employer needs to provide you with safety equipment for that type of job to keep the employee safe and to make sure that his workers are safe. The employer needs to check that all machinery is in working condition and isn’t damaged if so he needs to replace it or fix it depending on how bad the damage is. The employer needs to keep a clean and safe environments so that no one would have risks to the employees health. There need to be first aid facilities so just in case a person is injured is treated instantly so they won’t get more hurt. The materials in use need to make sure that they are using them properly and after they finish they must put the material where they got it from to keep the workshop organized for others. There needs to be rooms for necessary need like having a toilet, break room, there is good lighting, having good ventilation during work because the person needs to have a break and go to the toilet because then the person would not be stressed during work. In the workspace there need to be warning signs to see what must be followed and what not to keep everybody alerted. Question 5) The hard hat must be used where there is potential injury to the head with falling objects. This protects you from falling objects. 4 The earmuffs are used in areas where there will be a lot of noise with machines or tools. This protects the person from losing the sense of hearing. Safety shoes is used in areas where there is a risk that items fall on your foot and this stops the impact with the metal in the shoes The overall protects you from things cutting ,burning your skin or damaging your body and it helps to not dirty your clothes too 5 The safety glasses are used to protect your eyes from flying debris from going in your eyes Question 6) Hazards Possible Harm Model Controls Heavy Lifting It can hurt your back while lifting Use the proper lifting technique and wear non slip items to have more grip Entanglement with moving parts You have a chance to hurt badly Use an overall so your clothes do not get tangled Contact with metal chips or swarf They can enter your eyes or cut you Safety glasses to keep the chips out Noise It can reduce your hearing Use ear muffs Slips, trips and falls It can make physical damage to your body Use Safety shoes to not slip as much Information used: Teachers notes https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/topic-and-industry/machinery/metal-turning-lathes/ https://www.highspeedtraining.co.uk/hub/welding-hazards-in-the-workplace/ https://www.lsu.edu/eng/mie/cuf/ammf/safetyrules/MillingMachines.php#:~:text=Never%20 run%20the%20machine%20faster,wrenches%2C%20hammers%2C%20or%20tools. https://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/safety_haz/metalworking/lathes.html https://safetyculture.com/topics/welding-safety/10-welding-safety-rules/ https://www.hsa.ie/eng/your_industry/quarrying/maintenance_operations/workshop_safety/ 6 https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/employers-health-and-safetyresponsibilities#:~:text=Your%20employer%27s%20duty%20of%20care%20in%20practice ,All%20employers%2C%20whatever&text=prevent%20risks%20to%20health,handled%2C %20stored%20and%20used%20safely 7
