If you were given a chance to revise the title of Richard Cory, what would it be? Why? ANSWER: If I were given a chance to revise the title of Richard Cory, it would be “Behind the Surface”. It is because the poem made us realize that not all that’s manifested outside or what’s laid on the surface can say it all instead, every surface has a mystery behind it. The poem’s message is of a perfect analogy to the old quote “Don’t judge the book by its cover”. 2. Who is Richard Cory in the poem? ANSWER: Richard Cory is the protagonist in the poem. He is the almost-perfect mysterious man being looked up to by the villagers but ended up killing himself. 3. What do you think is the main theme of the poem? ANSWER: I think the main theme of the poem is depression. This theme is likely underpinned in the last part of the poem when the main character, Richard Cory killed himself which in effect revealed that he had an inner crisis despite his unreachable status in life and how others get envious of him and praise him. ACTIVITY 6 Directions: Be Creative in Making a Quote What is the theme of “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”? Make your own quotes related to the theme. Below, explain why it is related. The ones who know their core never loose themselves And the ones who have their vision always find their way. EXPLANATION: The poem tells about the speaker’s errand in the woods and in the latter part, he notes on the enchanting beauty of the wood; ‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep’ revealing that the speaker was mesmerized by the woods and was tempted to stay long but abruptly realized his commitment and decided to go on and be faithful to it stating; ‘But I have promises to keep’. This justifies the relevance of the poem to the quote I made. Sometimes in life, we come across some circumstances and temptations where we get tempted to stick with. We tend to go astray and in effect loose ourselves in the path. However, just like the speaker in the poem, when we have a clear vision of our commitment and knows our core, we will always know our purpose and find ourselves in the right path. ACTIVITY 7 Directions: Illustrate each stanza of the poem by creating a storyboard. A storyboard is a graphic organizer that plans a narrative. It is a powerful way to visually present information. Use the chart below for your illustration. ANSWER: Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.
