Insert Running Title 5 How to avoid? • Interpreter – helps the clinician translate languages to communicate with the patient. • A not well-trained interpreter may produce problems such as, misunderstanding and mistranslation. • Misunderstanding- the interpreter does not reflect the patient’s words correctly. • Mistranslation- the interpreter does not know the particular dialect of the patient. Insert Running Title 6 Cultural Bias • Happens when the assessor and patient have different cultural background but has the same language. • Example: European American assessors over diagnosing African American as having symptoms of schizophrenia because African American may present more intense symptoms Insert Running Title 7
