Upon digging more in the internet about the models and approaches that should be employed
by teachers in teaching literature, we discovered the Personal- Response Approach, InformationBased Approach, (butngi nalang dinhi saa imong idugang
Teaching literature to the students is essential for the reason that it is the first step to develop
their macro skill which is reading. It is also help to enhance students’ language proficiency and in
learning English language in general. Literature in education aimed to enhance learners in total
balanced, and integrated manner including the spiritual, intellectual, moral, political, philosophical
and emotional aspect.
PERSONAL RESPONSE APPROACH
A Personal Response Approach is an informal analysis of a text you are reading. It focuses in
your own interpretation towards the literature. This kind of approach emphasizes the crucial role
of a reader on the literary text he or she is reading. Using personal response approach helps students
become critical readers and thinkers because they emerged themselves in the story. This approach
also believe that a work of literatures comes to live when there is a connection between the reader
and the literary piece. The students become critical thinkers as well for the reason that when you
used this approach to analyze a literary text you need to supports your claims by providing
evidences from what you read and explain its relevance. This approach as well increas4s reading
comprehension because of its transactional engagement with the texts.
Learning competency: React to lay value judgement on critical issues that demand sound
analysis and call for prompt actions.
On the learning competencies stated above, we can use the Personal Response Approach by
providing the students a literary piece that will awaken their judgement skills towards what
happened in the story. For example, in the play “Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller” the
students will be able to judge using their own analysis on what important event happened. They
can openly comments on the traits of the character and what they should have done and not done.
Information- Based Approach
Information based approach, from the word “information” it tends to give knowledge and
information to the students (Thunnithet, 2011). It is a teacher- centered approach and needs a lot
of teacher’s input in giving different literary text to the students. Its aim is to expose the learners
to the facts and information towards a target language, culture and even the author of the literary
piece. According to Carter, 1998, this approach is a way of teaching knowledge about literature
where literature is seen as a source of information to the students. This approach is important
because students need to learn literary rules and meta- language to increase the students’ ability to
use this terms and ideas in writing speeches and literatures.
Learning Competency: Judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning,
and the effectiveness of the presentation.
Aforementioned literary competency, we can apply the Information- based approach when the
teacher is going to distribute a text that in informative such as “The Worst Depression of Modern
History” which can be discussed in 9th grade. Have the students learn what happened to the worst
depression American history. After reading the selection let them discuss the new information and
ideas in front of the class, let them compare the text to the reality so that they will gained new
knowledge with some guide from the teacher since this approach is teacher- centered.
