Brainstorming
Column Ideas
Columns might be about this…
Topic
In the news
Why would this be a good topic?
It is a current event that connects to
my life and our community
At school
I have opinions on this about my
school
Media, culture,
technology
Big Decisions
This impacts students at our school
Relationships
My friends and/or I have to make
choices about this while in high school
Everyone in our community has
interactions with family, friends,
teachers, peers, special people,
enemies, etc.
Column Idea Round Robin
● Each group will begin at one category idea
sheet.
● You have three minutes to brainstorm as many
topics as possible for your category.
● When time is up, you’ll move to a new sheet
● Do not comment or cross out any ideas that are
on the paper.
● If you agree with an idea, put a check next to it.
● When you get back your original paper, take it
down and bring it back to your table.
Group Share Out
● Look over the sheet and decide upon the
ideas that your group feels would be most
interesting.
●Each group will read out the top ideas they
are MOST interested in from their column
brainstorm.
●This does not need to be an idea the
original group wrote down – use your
classmates ideas.
Individual Column Preparation
● Choose three different topics from our
brainstorm (or your own) that you are
interested in.
●You will receive a Column Brainstorming
Sheet and plan/think about three different
column ideas before narrowing down to one.
● Before you leave class today, we will make
a class list of topics that each student will be
researching.
