Jung and Appa's Relationship Matures
Jung, despite distancing himself from the family, is portrayed as someone who is very
remorseful as well as someone who loves and is loved by his family. Jung makes a return to the
family after a long absence from the store, Jung and Appa are happy to see each other even
though they are both a bit hesitant to talk. Appa remarks that Jung is "Good at sports, music,
lots of thing" (Choi 100), demonstrating Appa's strong feelings for Jung. Later in the
conversation, Jung goes on to ask: " Can I work here Appa?... You wouldn't have to pay me that
much and you could always cash out. I don't have to handle the money" (Choi 101) Jung saying
he 'does not have to take care of the money' shows that Jung has matured, and realizes what
mistakes he made, thus showing character development and greater understanding, from when
he was young. Another example of Jung's maturation is when Appa exclaimed: " WHAT you just
say!ll You are selling japanese products in MY store. Japan Invades Korea, you know this! You
no sell Japanese products in my store!... Appa, they sell like crazy, everyone loves them." Jung
tries to defend himself from Appa without getting angry, as he would have done when he was
younger. Appa demonstrates an attitude change when he says: 'I need you Jung. I'm sorry.
Please keep running the store. I like it when you are here."(P1) Appa apologizes to Jung, telling
him how much Appa missed Jung while he was gone. When he says "I need you." This shows
love and how Appa's attitude has changed by openly and honestly sharing his feelings with
Jung. Jung and Appa have come to change their attitudes by showing appreciation and love for
what each has to offer.
