Solution to Assignment:
A body having a specific gravity of 0.7 floats on a liquid of specific gravity of 0.8. The
volume of the body above the liquid surface is what percent of its total volume?
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES:
1. A block of wood 0.20 m thick is floating in sea water. The specific gravity of wood is 0.65
while that of seawater is 1.03. Find the minimum area of a block which will support a man
weighing 80 kg.
2. A stone weighs 460 N in air. When submerged in water, it weighs 300 N. Find the volume
and the specific gravity of the stone.
3. An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on salt water of S.G of 1.03. If the
volume of the ice above the water surface is 1000 cubic meter, what is the total volume
of the ice?
4. If a 5-kg steel plate is attached to one end of 0.1 m by 0.3 m by 1.20 m wood pole,
what is the length of the pole above the water. S.G of wood is 0.5 and S.G of steel is
7.85.
5. A uniform block of steel ( S.G = 7.85) will float at mercury-water interface. What is the
ratio of distances a and b?
