Parallelogram of Forces
Question: What is a parallelogram?
Extended: Draw the shape below and make it into a parallelogram.
• A parallelogram is a simple four-sided shape (quadrilateral) with two pairs of
parallel sides.
• The opposite or facing sides of a parallelogram are of equal length and the
opposite angles of a parallelogram are the same size too.
We can use parallelograms to calculate resultant forces.
What is a resultant force?
To do this, we just need to make the rest of the parallelogram. You’ll need a
compass, a protractor, a ruler and a sharp pencil.
• For the example here, we’re given our measurements.
• For most examples, we have to decide on our own scale or measure
the vectors (sides) given accurately.
Parallelogram of Forces 2
Your task: Complete the following parallelogram of forces. Make sure you draw
the resultant force, measure how big it is and measure the angle (ϴ) it is acting
at!
Your task: Finish those sheets from last lesson.
Done that? Create a series of resultant forces for your partner to solve.
