Lecture 1. Essentials of Comparative Linguistics.
The lecture is aimed to give the knowledge of the aims and tasks of the Contrastive Typology, its
main notions and terms, to develop the students’ outlook of methods of investigation in
Contrastive Typology and their knowledge of the main achievements in this field of science.
Lecture 2. Typology of Vowels and Consonants in English and Ukrainian
The lecture reveals aims, subjects and objects of contrasting at the phonetic/phonological level of
English and Ukrainian. It observes isomorphic and allomorphic features in the systems of vowels
and consonants, the theory of syllable in the contrasted languages, approaches to defining wordstress and utterance stress, using the intonation.
Lecture 3. Typology of Lexical Systems of English and Ukrainian
The linguistic principles of typological study of lexicon, the approaches to giving the global
classification of lexicon, the main classes of words in English and Ukrainian are in the centre of
discussion. Students try to analyze and compare the principles of dividing the words in two
contrasted languages into some groups, and on this base find the isomorphic and allomorphic
features of their divisions.
Lecture 4. Word-formation in English and Ukrainian
The lecture touches upon very complicated questions of contrastive typological investigations at
the lexical levels of two contrasted languages and reveals such notions as “onomasiology”,
“semasiology”, “substantivization”, “adjectivization”, “vearbalization”, “adverbialization”.

Lecture 1. Isomorphic and allomorphic features in the morphological systems of two
contrasted languages
The lecture touches upon isomorphism and allomorphism in the morphemic structure of two
contrasted languages, gives students understanding common and divergent features of Nouns,
Adjectives, Numerals and Pronouns in English and Ukrainian
Lecture 2. Typological characteristics of Parts of Speech
The lecture includes discussing typological characteristics of Verbs, Adverbs, Statives, Modal
Verbs and Phrases, Functionals, reveals their isomorphic and allomorphic features in two
contrasted languages.
Lecture 3. Features, characterizing the word combination and sentence in English and
Ukrainian
While doing contrasting of two languages at different levels it’s very important to analyze
isomorphic and allomorphic features concerning theory of sentences in English and Ukrainian.
The given lecture reveals isomorphism and allomorphism at the level of simple sentences in two
contrasted languages, explains common and divergent features of the main and secondary parts
of Simple Sentence.
Lecture 4. Typology of the Composite Sentence
Typology of the Complex Sentence in English and Ukrainian is touched upon in the lecture;
main isomorphic and allomorphic features are revealed and discussed.
