Poetry Assignment Instruction Sheet
♦ This newly added assignment will center around free verse poetry. As you remember, we
spent this week covering the general rules of poetry focusing on free verse. It is now time
for you all to try your hand and put your knowledge to the test.
♦ Students will individually write a 1 PAGE MAXIMUM free verse poem on a topic of
their choosing.
o Try to choose a topic that interests you
o Get creative! Try not to be terribly generic
o If you are having any trouble selecting a topic, please reach out to me!
♦ This assignment will be 15% of your final grade
o Attached is the grading rubric for this specific assignment
♦ This assignment will be submitted in sections. They are as follows
o Monday October 17th -Topic of choice and poetry introduction
o Friday October 21st -First draft (about half of the poem)
o Friday October 28th -Second draft (nearly complete poem)
o Monday October 31st –Final draft due
♦ This assignment is what you make it!
o Often students have little interest or just don’t believe they can write poetry and it
shows in their work. Have an open mindset!
o You have the necessary background knowledge.
o Do not get frustrated.
