Use this workbook with the book Short Vowel Words For Beginning Readers, Abridged. The words are taught in the same sequence in each book. Practice reading each set of words, then do the related workbook pages. Students who write the answers should be sure to use their best handwriting. 2. Some of the words in this workbook may be new to students. Be sure to explain the meaning of any unknown words. 3. Students may write the correct answers on each page. Students who are not yet able to write may use the cut and paste answers. They are located at the end of this book. There are no cut and paste answers for the tests. 4. Congratulate the student on taking a big step towards becoming an independent writer. A Note About Continuous And Stopped Consonants Continuous consonants are those that can be held for a period of time, such as ssssss, ffffff, and mmmmmm. Stopped consonants cannot be held (the sound disappears right after they are pronounced), such as t, c, and p. It is easier for beginning readers to read words that start with continuous consonants, since the sounds can be held long enough to easily connect with the vowel that follows. Students can more readily match the pronunciation of the letters with a word that they know. In this book, words that begin with continuous consonants are taught in groups of words that rhyme. In the word man, the reader can pronounce the letter sounds mmmaaannn without a break between the sounds. In the word c...aaannn, the sound of the beginning letter c cannot be held, so it is harder to connect it smoothly with the short a sound that follows. In order to put the sounds together, the student must learn to put the c sound and the short a sound together, and then add the ending sound, a task which takes practice. For this reason, words that begin with stopped consonants are grouped by beginning sounds, so the student automatically gets the needed practice.
