Read this article about millionaire homes and match the
descriptions with the photos.
Some millionaires like tiving ir the centre of the
wodd's capital cities. Others prefer to live
somewhere quiet and private. Here are three
special rnillionaire homes: one on the beach, one
in the rnountains and one in t}re middle of a
tropical forest.
I
2
The first home is a rree house, builr high up
in the trees of a tropical rain forest. But it,s no
ordinary tree house. It,s on two floors and
there are two bathrooms and three bedrooms.
The top floor of the house is a roof-top
terrace. This is the ,breakfasrroom,. where
you can have your coffee and cornflakes with
the monkeys. They think the house is just
another tree!
Match each sentence with a home.
Example
You can go horse riding here. house1
d) There's a beach near the house.
e) There are fantastic views from the roof.
f)
Wild animals come onto the roof-top terrace.
s) You can swim on the roof.
h) There isn't a ground floor in this house.
16
l.
The second home is an old monastery, built
high on a rock. The only way ro get ihere is
by helicopter. There's a helicopter pad on the
roof, next to the swimming pool. It isn't very
big: only three bedrooms, a living room, rwo
bathrooms, a kitchen and a gym. And some
very spectacularviews.
3
The third home is my personal favourite. It,s a
beach house, but a beach house with a
difference. It's got a private beach, of course.
In fact, it's built on its own private island.
This home is actually a collection of small
houses: a little village in fact. There are four
swimming pools, eight tennis courts and
twenty horses in the riding stables.
Pr onunc iat ion

a) You need a helicopter to get to this house.
b) There isn't a swimming pool.
c) There are several houses built next to each

Which Hawaiian beach is the home of modern
surfing?
A Brief Hisrory of
Surfins
Surfing is not a new sport. Hundreds of years
ago the princes and princesses of Hawaii were
famous surfers and surfing was a royal art.
The sailor James King was the first European
to see the Hawaiians surhng. He wrote about
his travels to Hawaii in 1778 and described
how the Hawaiians played in the enormous
waves on the beach in\l/aikiki.
1 photo _
In 1907 the writer Jack London visited
Waikiki beach and met George Freeth. Freeth
was an Irish Haq'aiian and he rvas one of
Harr'aii'sbest surfers.Jack London invited him
to visit California. Freeth accepted the
inlitation and became the frrst man to surf in
California.
But the man who really made surfrng
popular in the USA was Duke Paoa
Kahanamoku. Duke was an Olympic swimmer
and a Hollywood star. He took his Hollywood
friends surfing on Santa Monica beach in
California and in 1915 he introduced the sport
to Australia.
2 photo _
In the 1960s and 70s the sport grew and
grew. The Beach Boys sang about it, Holllwood
made films about it and surfing became
California's number one free-time activity.
Today surfing is an international sport, with
competitions held all over the world. But
Vaikiki beach is still one of the best surfing
beaches in the world, with some of the world's
best waves and some of the world's best
surfers.

Mr and Mrs Otis ran across the library.

He went back upstairs and walked along

second ghost was still there, but its eyes were
no longer burning. He went up to it. He
touched it. The head of the second ghost fell
onto the floor. It was not a ghost at all. It was
a head made from a large round vegetable

inside it. There was a card on the floor.
