PAMPANGA STATE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY College of Education EDUC 6 Curriculum Development Christian Ross Furton November 14, 2022 BSEd English 3-A Prof. Divina Ladrillo Task 2: Write your experiences at home that entails as a hidden curriculum in your life. “Hidden Curriculum at Home” There are hidden curriculum in everything that we do. We think that we can’t learn from the simple things that we do in our everyday lives but in reality, we would learn a lot from those experiences. Lessons I believe should never be limited in the four corners of the room. Learning can be found in every aspect of our lives may it be a mental, social, emotional and spiritual experience. We all first learned the simplest thing like reading and speaking at home and for that reason it is not a surprise that we would acquire a lot of knowledge even in simple household chores. One of the things that our family is very particular about is the time that we eat. Once my father already called us to eat, we should prepare the table and eat together. No matter what we are doing we should go and obey his instruction. I believe this family culture of ours taught me on how to respect family time. My father always tells us that “You are doing various things as you go on with your day and this is the only time we would be able to spend time and talk that is why family dinner is so important.” Not only did this taught me on how to value my family, instead this also reminds me every day that I should value my love ones. Even a simple conversation and how our day went is already a great thing for us to understand each other better and it contributes to the overall harmony, love and care for one another. Another hidden curriculum in our home is we always pray before we eat. This may be a tradition to others but to us this is one of our main values at home. It teaches me to always look up and put Him above all things. My parents taught me through this practice that whatever happens I should thank Him and put Him first. Seek Him first and all shall be added as Matthew 6:33 said. That is why every time I face a new transition or challenge in my life, I always pray for I know His guidance and His hands holds me, cares for me and will protect me. We also have schedule in our house on who is going to clean and wash the dishes every week. I am the youngest child at home and the only one left with my parents. Often times, I do my task every MWFS – Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. This made me realize that in the real life that I’ll be facing there are bigger responsibilities needed to be handled correctly. Because I was able to master time management, additional responsibilities in the school and church is the least of my worries. This also taught me a valuable lesson that I always say to myself, “Don’t rest in the middle, rest in the end.” This is true with me, for often times when you rest even though the task you’re doing is not yet accomplished, we tend to be complacent about it and procrastinate. This is one of the things that I overcame in my College times, for time management is really important during this time. I know that this isn’t a household chore but I still want to include this here for I know this is one of the hidden messages my mom always tells me. When I get home from school she keeps asking how was my day or if I encountered any problems. This might be a simple but I know it will remain in my memory and heart. This taught me that it’s okay to cry and to face problems but after that I should always think of the solution rather than the problem. It also serves as an example to me when that time comes that I will be a parent. It reminds me to care and to ask my child’s feelings in the future. Finally, my mother or my father never wakes me up before going to school or even church. This simple act molds me to become responsible for myself. It guides me how to be independent to the people around me. It also makes me realize of my priorities. For if I’m not going to wake up and do it, it only means that it doesn’t matter to me at all right? It also teaches me the value of grabbing the opportunity that I have. This reminds me of the question I saw on Facebook, if you are given 86,400 pesos every day, would you grab it and would you do with it? Of course, we would definitely take it. Actually this talks about the time we have in a day, we have 86, 400 seconds in a day, not waking up early we would miss most of it. As they say time is the greatest commodity that we have. A simple gesture of discipline by waking up early already makes a lot of difference.
