Republic of the Philippines Department of Education REGION XI SCHOOLS DIVISION OF DAVAO ORIENTAL BAGANGA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL TRAINING DESIGN I. Title: TRAINING OF JHS AND SHS CAMPUS JOURNALIST II. Date: NOVEMBER 24-26,2022 III. Venue: BNHS COMPUTER LABORATORY IV. Rationale: It is the declared policy of the State to uphold and protect the freedom of the press even at the campus level and to promote the development and growth of campus journalism as a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth. In furtherance of this policy, the State shall undertake various programs and projects aimed at improving the journalistic skills of students concerned and promoting responsible and free journalism. In today’s world, technology grants all individuals the ability to communicate to a mass audience. Information can spread immediately; rather than waiting for a journalist to publish information, people have the ability to post news using technologies such as social media outlets. With this increased autonomy, it is important that our students understand the power of their words, and they should be equipped with all necessary tools to present their information in a professional manner. Historically, only journalists could publish information in news stories. As technologies have changed, however, the average individual gained more opportunities to communicate and our students now have the potential to publish their own information. Students can have a voice in the public sphere, which gives them a sense of entitlement and pride in their work. The beauty of journalism is that students have already been creating journalism through their personal interactions between each other. By creating a journalism unit, we would be harnessing their abilities with technology and creative writing and putting into an academic form. For example, students are professionals at using social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, where they relay information within their circles without the realization that they are publishing their own personal journalistic page. It is vital to the success of the classroom that we as educators accommodate to the students’ interests as well as their abilities. By teaching a unit that uses style familiar to what they read and write on a regular basis, this will facilitate the understanding of text for the students. By focusing on information relevant to the students, they will in turn become more inclined to participate in class as well as absorbing themselves into future lessons. All students have the potential to create successful work in the class as well as outside of the school realm in their personal lives, which creates more interest in the subject. By assigning various activities and projects and showing the class what they are already doing, they will have positive reinforcement; assuring them that they are already aware of how to create these journalistic pieces.
