“THE HUMAN MIND AT BIRTH IS
NOTHING BUT A BLANK SLATE, OR
TABULA RASA” - JOHN LOCKE

What is socialization?
Socialization refers to the
process of social influence
through which a person acquires
the culture or subculture of
his/her group, and in acquiring
these cultural elements, the
individual’s self and personality
are shaped.

What is…
Socialization is defined “as the
process of learning that enables
the learner to perform social roles.
Thus, not all learning is
socialization, since presumably
some learning is irrelevant to the
motivation and ability necessary
for participation in the social
system” (Johnson, 1960, p. 110.)
What is…
Socialization, therefore,
addresses two important
problems of social life: the
problem of societal
continuity and the problem
of individual development
(Gecas, 2001 p.1).
What is…
Importance of Socialization:
It enables a person to learn
the different cultural
languages, norms, values,
and one’s role in the society
in order to fit the group.

MAIN GOALS OF SOCIALIZATION:


An individual learns to become a
member of society. This results
to a group to have acquired a
new member and thus sustains
that group.
Teaches an individual to control
his or her impulse and to develop
a conscience.


MAIN GOALS…
Teaches individuals how to
prepare and perform certain
social roles (e.g., occupational
roles, gender roles, institutional
roles, etc.)
Teaches individuals on learning
and identifying what is important
and valued within a specific
culture.
MAIN GOALS…

Instills to members what
behavior are expected of
them; a form of social
control
Enculturation
It is “a form of cultural transmission by
which society transmits its culture and
behavior to its members by surrounding
developing members with appropriate
models” (Berry, Poortinga, Segall, and
Dasen, 2002 p.19). Berry et al. distinguish
between enculturation and socialization,
Major Aspects of Socialization
Wentworth (1980) suggests that
socialization must leave room for free will
and human autonomy, although he
recognizes the patterned social structure
and processes that influence individuals.
Three Major Aspects of
Socialization:
1.
2.
The context in which it occurs - It is
like the theater or stage where
socialization occurs.
The content and process people
use to socialize others is like the
play, the lines, and the actors.
Three Major …
3.
The results or outcomes arising
from those context and processes
may be described as what happens
later, after someone has been
exposed to content and processes.
Agents of Socialization and
Enculturation:
• Family -It is the first agent of
socialization.
• Peer-group – An individual begin
to develop an identity separate
from their parents and exert
independence.
Agents of …
• School - It molds the beliefs, values,
and attitudes of the students through
various academic and social activities.
• Religion - It is an important avenue of
socialization for many people.
Important ceremonies related to family
structure—like marriage and birth—are
connected to religious celebrations.
Agents of …
• Government - Participates in
socialization through the
implementation of the laws of the
country.
Agents of …
• Mass Media - People learn about
objects of material culture (like
new technology and
transportation options), as well as
nonmaterial culture—what is true
(beliefs), what is important
(values), and what is expected
(norms).
