An introduction to the Award in Education and Training This presentation will cover: • • • • • • • • • The Award in Education and Training The teaching, learning and assessment cycle Assessment for the Award Micro-teaching Mentors Progression Summary quiz Reading list Website list The Award • The Award is an introductory qualification for anyone wanting to teach or train others in the further education, training and skills sector • As it’s an introductory qualification it will not fully qualify you as a teacher, but it will give you a good idea of what it’s like to teach • The Award is ideal if you are not yet in a teaching role, have just started teaching, or just want to know what’s involved Who is it for? It is for anyone who wants to teach or train in the further education and skills sector, for example: • • • • • • • • Adult & Community Education Commerce, industry, public and voluntary sectors Emergency, Public and Uniformed Services Further, Adult Education and Sixth Form Colleges Ministry of Defence/Armed Forces Offender Learning Private Training Organisations Work-based Learning Entry requirements You should: • be aged 19 or over • have a reasonable command of English, maths, and information and communication technology (ICT) • be prepared to study in your own time i.e. reading, research and completing assessment activities • have a specialist subject in mind that you would like to teach Award units There are three units: 1. Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training 2. Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education 3. Understanding assessment in education and training Learning and Development units It is possible to substitute either of the following ‘Facilitate’ units for unit two of the Award And/or the ‘Assessment’ unit for unit three of the Award • Facilitate learning and development for individuals • Facilitate learning and development in groups • Understanding the principles and practices of assessment The Award will cover aspects of the teaching, learning and assessment cycle: Identifying needs Evaluating learning Assessing learning Planning learning Facilitating learning Assessment • Each unit consists of learning outcomes and assessment criteria • You will complete various assessment activities to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and understanding throughout your time taking the Award • Some of your work will be sampled by an internal quality assurer (IQA) and possibly an external quality assurer (EQA) to ensure it meets the requirements Micro-teaching • You will be required to deliver a short session, usually to your peers, known as micro-teaching • You should then evaluate your practice • If you are currently in a teaching role, it may be possible to be observed with your own learners in your teaching environment instead of a micro-teach session to your peers Mentors • If you are already teaching, known as inservice, it would be useful to have a mentor • This is someone who is a teacher in the same subject area as yourself • They can give you ongoing support and advice throughout your time working towards the Award Progression You can progress to either the • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (or Cert Ed/PGCE) Summary quiz 1.
