The author writes about the story of his Thanksgiving. He says that until 4 years ago the Chinese side of his family would spend Thanksgiving together and his grandma would cook rice and gravy; this was his culture and even if he was always considered Asian he doesn’t think that he fits into one specific culture. Once his grandmother died he thinks he lost a big part of his Asian culture and he is quite sad about it. His grandmother wasn’t taught that diversity was valuable because when she immigrated to America there were still really strict policies. His parents always had to downplay their Asian culture but he believes that diversity is valuable and everyone should keep a big part of their culture. I think that the author of the text is right when he says that we should not be categorized but we should still try to respect and honour our traditions. I believe that culture and diversity are important and everyone should respect each other’s culture and be open to diversity. Diversity is one of the most beautiful things on earth and without it everything would be flat and the same. We should try to be open-minded about different lifestyles and cultures to understand each other better. It is important to cultivate traditions and be proud of your own culture and origins.
