Approach Lights Medium-Intensity Approach Lighting Systems They provide a visual lighting path for landing aircraft. The MALSR system usually is a 1,400foot-long array of lights but can be longer or shorter depending on local terrain ALSF-2 Approach lights system with sequenced flashing lights in ILS Cat-II/III configurations. https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 1/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… Visual Glideslope Indicator System Precision Approach Path Indicators The Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) is a light system positioned along side the runway that consists of either two or four light arrays that provide a visual indication of an airplane’s position on the glide-path for the associated runway. At ORD, the four light fixture setup is used. See image below for light code definition. At ORD, the FAA owns and maintains these visual aids https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 2/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… Runway Lights Runway Instrument Approach Light Type Threshold Approach & Intensity Light PAPI TDZ Light color 4L Localiser 22R ILS no RWY RWY Center- Edge RWY End line Light Light Light Yes High lights CAT I Green MALSR: 1,400 foot 4-light PAPI on Yes Red intensity Yes White High Red intensity left (3.00 degrees medium intensity approach lighting glide path) system with runway alignment indicator lights 4R ILS CAT I Green MALSR: 1,400 foot medium intensity approach lighting system with runway 4-light PAPI on right (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes White Yes High Red intensity alignment indicator lights https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 3/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM 22L https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… ILS CAT I Green MALSR: 1,400 foot medium intensity approach lighting system with runway 4-light PAPI on right (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes Yes White High Red intensity alignment indicator lights 9L ILS CAT II/III DME Yes Green Yes White ALSF2: standard High Red intensity 2,400 foot high intensity approach lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 27R ILS CAT II/III DME Yes Green Yes White ALSF2: standard High Red intensity 2,400 foot high intensity approach lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 9R ILS CAT I DME Green MALSR: 1,400 foot medium intensity approach lighting 4-light PAPI on left (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes Yes White High Red intensity system with runway alignment indicator lights 27L ILS CAT II/III DME Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach 4-light Yes PAPI on White left (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes High Red intensity lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 14R ILS CAT II/III DME Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach lighting system with 4-light PAPI on right (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes Yes White High Red intensity centerline sequenced flashers 32L ILS CAT I Green MALSR: 1,400 foot Yes White Yes High Red intensity medium intensity approach lighting https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 4/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… system with runway alignment indicator lights 10L ILS DME CATII/III Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach 4-light PAPI on left (3.00 degrees glide path Yes Yes White High Red intensity lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 28R ILS DME CATII/III Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach 4-light PAPI on left (3.00 degrees glide path) Yes 4-light PAPI on left (3.00 degrees glide path Yes 4-light PAPI on left (3.00 degrees glide path Yes Yes White High Red intensity lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 10C ILS DME CATII/III Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach Yes White High Red intensity lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 28C ILS DME CATII/III Green ALSF2: standard 2,400 foot high intensity approach Yes White High Red intensity lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 10R ILS DME CAT II/III Green Yes Yes White ALSF2: standard High Red intensity 2,400 foot high intensity approach lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers 28L ILS DME CAT II/III ALSF2: standard Green Yes White Yes High Red intensity 2,400 foot high intensity approach lighting system with centerline sequenced flashers https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 5/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… Taxiway Lights Taxiway centerline lights are used to facilitate ground traffic under low visibility conditions. They are located along the taxiway centreline in a straight line on straight portions, on the centreline of curved portions, and along designated taxiing paths in portions of runways, ramp and apron areas. Taxiway centreline lights are steady burning and emit green light. Taxiway Center-line Lights Taxiway edge lights are used to outline the edges of taxiways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions. These fixtures emit blue light. Amber lights indicate the intersection of a vehicle roadway. Taxiways have a 3 step light intensity system, controlled by ATCT & electrical vaults. Taxiway Edge Lights Stop-Bar lights are used to confirm instruction from air traffic controllers' clearance to enter or cross an active runway in low visibility conditions https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2F… 6/11 11/4/22, 1:30 PM https://sites.google.com/site/atsys2ay1516te01team5/technical-specification/systems/airport-lights?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp… It consists of a row of red, uni-directional, in pavement lights across taxiway width, and elevated red lights on each side Stop-Bar Lights Taxiway lead-off lights extend from the runway centerline to a point on an exit taxiway to expedite movement of aircraft from the runway. These lights alternate green and yellow from the runway centerline to the runway holding position or the ILS/MLS critical area, as appropriate. The system pumps oil through a series of pipes just under the surface of the bridges to keep the pavement warm. It also, however, limits the depth of inpavement lighting fixtures that can be used. For years, the shallow 1 ¼-inch deep bases didn’t present a problem. As the original inpavement fixtures aged, however, they became more susceptible to leaks, which eventually required maintenance crews to be out on the taxiway multiple times a month. More recently, replacement parts for the approximately 25-year-old system became increasingly difficult to find, so O’Hare needed a new strategy.
