They Say/I Say Paragraph Templates Create a paragraph that responds to the piece by using the template-­‐types suggested below. Look for the template headings in the Templates for Good Argumentative Writing handout from They Say/ I Say. 1. Introduce the piece—author and subject: In (type of text), (title of text), (author’s first and last name), (verb e.g., claims, argues, asserts), that (paraphrase or quote the essential claim and include essential sub claims). 2. Capture authorial action. 3. Introduce a pertinent quote. 4. Explain that quote. 5. Disagree with reasons OR Agree with a Difference. 6. Support your last assertion with evidence and a warrant (Explanation of why or how the data supports the claim, the underlying assumption that connects your data to your claim). 7. Entertain an Objection OR Name a Naysayer OR add Metacommentary OR a quote. 8. Make a concession while standing your ground. 9. Establish why your claim matters (What’s the urgency)?
