Reflection about “Selecting and Organizing Information”
In schools, writing and creating an essay is one of the requirements needed. Amid the prewriting stage,
we frequently discover ourselves with lots of information from distinctive sources. How we organize and
select such data could be a vital choice that brings the victory or failure within the writing process that we
need to handle.
When taking up this lesson, I did not find it hard for the reason that this topic was already introduced to
me and I have already used this when creating essays at school. I learned a lot from this topic. Selecting
and organizing information may be a huge help for each one of us. It keeps us centered as we organize
and write our essays or paragraphs. Besides, this topic makes us convey the information orderly which t
makes the stream of our information smoothly.
Being organized makes everything a lot easier. That is why I believe that this topic has made me realize
that it helps us to get to work faster without wasting any time. Hence, keeping our information organized
in an essay makes everything easier. Subsequently, we have to utilize a few methods in organizing and
selecting such information. After all, it will assist us in seeing the greater picture that will hold our essays
together.
Reflection about “Patterns of Development in Writing”
When taking up this lesson, it wasn’t really hard for me for the reason that this topic is already familiar
and easy to understand. I have learned a lot from this topic and one of it is, it made me realize that it is
helpful to determine the patterns of development in writing. Knowing and understanding this topic will
surely help us when organizing an outline, when developing ideas while writing, it can make our writing
effective, and could help us to express ourselves. By doing this, it simply means that a certain person
will become a good writer. Patterns of development in writing helps us to shape our essays, and any
form of writing. Hence, it will also serve as a guide for us to write correctly. Lastly, the patterns are very
usual in school as well as in our everyday writing and thinking.
Reflection about “Properties of a Well-written Text”
How important is a text? without a doubt, text, essays, or any other written papers are essential in our
day-to-day lives, especially in the academic and professional setting. However, to write a proper text
entails knowing the basic properties, so that delivering the message is possible without any errors or
misconceptions.
Learning lesson 3: Applying Properties of a Well-written text was very informative and insightful. In this, I
have learned the Fundamental Properties of a Well-written Text namely: Organization, Coherence and
Cohesion, Language Use, and Mechanics. Just like any other subject, English can be technical
especially in terms of grammar. The technicalities exist to avoid miscommunication among people and to
promote effective communication. For one, I learned how important organization in a text, to achieve
unity, appropriate connectives between and within paragraphs. Also, the formula of STTC (single idea,
topic sentence, appropriate technique, and connectives) makes a well-structured paragraph. Second,
Coherence and Cohesion, the two basic features, facilitate textual continuity. Third, the importance of
proper language use, to increase credibility in one's work. Lastly, the Mechanics specify the established
conventions for words that I use.
In a nutshell, learning lesson 3 was fun and informative. I understand its importance especially when it
comes to communication. Writing can be a challenge, however by equipping myself with proper
knowledge and skills, I can do things, that I do not even know I can.
Reflection about “Using Critical Reading for Thinking and
Reasoning”
In this time, where people face their gadgets 24/7, we are in no doubt living in the world of the internet.
On various social media platforms, the news is easily circulated, with one click, and you get your daily
information. However, are we wise enough to read and comprehend what is given to us? or are we just
indifferent? In lesson 4: Critical Reading, we are thought how to criticize, not to find fault, but to assess
the strength of the evidence and the argument, to have a deeper understanding of the topic thus
practicing good judgment.
Learning lesson 4: Critical Reading was one of my favorites because as a youth who spends a lot of
time browsing the net, having the skill to assess the accuracy of information is a must in this new
normal. Also in critical reading, I learned the 3 steps of modes analysis: (1) What a text says, (2) What a
text does, (3) What a text means. In addition, techniques for reasoning are introduced: Dare to read
every day, Learn to focus on the main ideas, Examine the pros and cons of your argument/resolution,
Organize your thoughts, and lastly, Note points for improvement. These steps and techniques
presented, serve as a guide on how to apply critical reading correctly and effectively.
In conclusion, critical reading is essential to know how to examine critically what I see, feel and read, to
be able to practice good judgment and well-informed decisions. This skill can be applied not only in the
academic or professional setting but even in our day-to-day life. With this, we can prevent the spread of
inappropriate or false information and promote the practice of critical reading for peaceful and effective
communication with people.
