Fresno City Fire Department 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 325.001 PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTER TASK BOOK PURPOSE The Probationary Firefighter Task Book is used as a guideline for the minimum training a probationary firefighter is to complete during their probationary period. APPLICATION The Probationary Firefighter Task Book is designed to assist the newly appointed firefighter in developing the basic skills necessary to perform in a satisfactory manner as a firefighter for the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department). OPERATIONAL POLICY The probationary firefighter shall be required, as part of the probationary period, to obtain signoffs on the listed subjects and skills in the task book by a captain or designee. The probationary firefighter will present the task book to the assigned training officer at the 5-month exam and 11-month exam for documentation and evaluation purposes. The task book is to be submitted to the Training Division prior to the end of the one-year probationary period. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE The probationary firefighter is required to learn the subjects listed in the task book and demonstrate competency in each area prior to the end of his/her one-year probationary period. Fire captains should evaluate the progress in the listed subjects and/or skills. Any assistance requested by the probationary firefighter should be provided by the personnel involved. Loss or damage to this task book may result in disciplinary action and require the probationary firefighter to re-attempt all previously completed sign offs. The probationary firefighter is responsible for completing all signoffs required during the given period before the end of the assigned training period (i.e., probationary firefighter academy, 5-month, 11-month). The probationary firefighter must present this task book to the assigned training officer at the end of the probationary firefighter academy, 5-month exam, and 11-month exam for documentation and evaluation purposes. Successful completion of this task book does not guarantee the probationary firefighter any certifications or completion of the probationary period. EVALUATOR RESPONSIBILITIES An evaluator is any individual who verifies the probationary firefighter can satisfactorily execute a job performance requirement (JPR). A qualified evaluator is designated by the Fire Chief, or authorized designee, and will possess the equivalent or higher-level certification. If no such evaluator is present within the organization, the Fire Chief, or authorized designee, will designate an individual with more experience than the probationary firefighter and a demonstrated ability to execute the job performance requirements. A task book may have more than one evaluator. On successful completion of a skill/JPR by a probationary firefighter, the evaluator will date, and initial the task book. The evaluator will ensure one section of the signature verification page is completed. Some of the skills/JPRs are closely related to each other. If the evaluator feels, in his/her opinion, more than one skill/JPR has been performed during a single evolution, the evaluator may sign off the corresponding skills/JPRs. Skills/JPRs may be completed at emergency incidents or in simulated emergency incidents. Effective Date: May 2015 Current Revision Date: 7/19/2022 Next Revision (1) Date: 7/19/2023 Author: E.
